“We jam.” That’s what the ‘About’ section on Spafford‘s website says. Plain and simple. This four-piece from Prescott, Arizona formed in 2009 and consists of Jordan Fairless (Bass/Vocals), Red Johnson (Keys/Vocals), Brian Moss (Guitar/Vocals), and Cameron Laforest (Drums/ Vocals). They play the perfect fusion of alternative rock, funk, jazz, bluegrass, and dance jams.
Spafford is currently on their âFor Amusement Only Tour 2018â and heading to Florida for their first ever Florida run. For this leg of the tour, they are bringing along local Orlando legends The Groove Orient for three of the shows (excluding Orlando). The consecutive four-night Florida run starts down south at Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday, January 31, then rolls up the west coast to Crowbar in Tampa, then over to The Social in Orlando, and finishing east side at Jack Rabbits in Jacksonville. If you don’t have tickets yet, you had better get on it. The Jacksonville show sold out yesterday, which has been the case on several tour stops. Very limited tickets remain for the rest of the Florida run. Check the band’s Facebook for a chance to win tickets to the shows.
We are headed down for our first headlining shows in Florida this week! How bout we give away a pair of tickets to each…
The only other time Spafford has played in Florida was a few months ago atSUWANNEE HULAWEEN at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida on Halloween weekend. Other than Umphrey’s, they were the band I was most excited to see.
Ok, on to the interview. So, it is 4:00 PM on Monday, January 29, and I’m finishing up work at my office. It’s been a long day already so I punch out and get on the horn with Jordan for a quick interview. The band is pulling into a rest stop somewhere on the interstate, on their way down from their last show in Atlanta two days earlier. Using my office speaker phone to call, I attempt to record the audio of our conversation on my cell, but after a few interchanges of not being able to clearly hear or be heard, I abandon the speaker phone.
Turns out that the band has some roots in Florida, as Jordan previously resided in Gainesville, although he grew up in Tennessee as a Vols fan before moving to Gator Country. (Go Noles!)
What are you listening to while their on the road? The answer was anything from dirty south rap to electronic to Kendrick Lamar.
The first Spafford song I ever heard was “Reprise”… its the funkiest damn thing with a few minutes of solid building up into the most shredding riff I might have ever heard (you know it when you hear it). Anyway, a lingering question that was always on my mind was: what is “Reprise” reprising? Well, after plenty of listening to their numerous live albums, and their one and only studio album (self titled), it came to me. They occasionally play “America” then go straight into “Reprise.” On the studio album, the last minute or so of “America” slows down to a funky crawl. Jordan says that one time when they were playing it, someone stopped playing and someone else kept playing, and it eventually became a reprise of the ending of “America” and a new song was born.
How did Spafford get started? They were just another bar band. Jordan says “it was kind of a happy accident.” They were attracting crowds (aka Spaffnerds) and getting people to dance, so they just kept doing it, and one day they realized the had themselves a real band. They have been touring for about a year straight now, which included an opening spot for Umphrey’s McGee at over a dozen shows.

If you look on Spotify, there is one studio album and six live albums, including a new outstanding and pure live studio album titled Abaculus: An Improvisational Experienceâ (released August 9, 2017). This album was recorded in a single take and is presented as an hour-long single track. This is similar to the Cabin jams they live streamed from a cabin in the Colorado mountains. Is any new studio music in the works or are there any future plans for more cabin jams? Not really, it sounds like touring is the main thing on the mind.

What is a Spafford? Jordan says that the first name of the band wasn’t that good, so they had to find another name. A good friend of theirs who was in law school was learning some new words and said: “Hey, call your band Officious Tort Fever.” Tort is a wrongful act or an infringement of a right (other than under contract) leading to civil legal liability. Well, another friend, Chuck Johnson (Spaffordâs original lighting designer and co-lyricist), didn’t like that name and couldn’t remember how to say it, so he says “Is that your real band name? Uh, let’s call it…. Spafford” which is actually his middle nickname.

What is Spafford’s spirit animal? “Crazy story…” says Jordan. They were driving on Interstate-17 in Arizona one night in Jordan’s old van, everyone else is sleeping. All of a sudden an enormous, massive white elk is standing the median, straight out of Fargo or Northern Exposure. Their jaws drop. “Do you guys see that? Is that the spirit of the forest or something?” Spafford is a great white elk.
Spafford encompasses an all-in-one identity that brings a diversity of pace. Like several other up-and coming-bands in the scene like Tauk, The Main Squeeze, The Fritz, and Big Something just for example, they’re emerging from the jam matrix of Phish, Umphreyâs McGee, Disco Biscuits, quickly climbing the ranks and stepping up huge. No show is the same, and different vibes during the day can bring different jam styles in the night, from alternative rock to jazz to shredding face to spacey jams. And one can always expect a cover or two, and I love their cover spectrum: from “Eminence Front” (The Who) in Atlanta just a few days ago to the more commonly covered “Mad World” (Tears For Fears), from “Soul To Squeeze” (Red Hot Chili Peppers) to Long View (Green Day) and of course there’s some Grateful Dead up in there.
Univseral Funk Orchestra (U.F.O.) announce the release date for their first single, “On The Rise,” scheduled to drop Friday, April 20, 2018. Brockhampton, a large boy band formed in San Marcos, Texas in 2015, has quickly become a fan favorite. The members met each other on the popular Kanye West fan forum “KanyeToThe.” Currently based in California, Brockhampton creates hip hop music…and a lot of it!
In 2016, the group released their first mixtape titled All-American Trash. In 2017 alone, they have managed to release a triology of albums: Saturation, Saturation II and Saturation III. Their dedication and chemistry as a band is displayed in their work.
Brockhampton performed the âLove your Parents Tourâ at The Ritz Ybor in Tampa, FL at 8:00pm.
The line extended farther than the eye could see. Fans toward the front of the line stated that they had been waiting since as early as 9 am. The show was sold out. Eight members of the band came out in their signature orange jumpsuits and immediately evoked excitement and energy from the audience. Some fans even wore orange jumpsuits to the show, along with blue face paint, which is another tradition.
When the band first came out, they started chanting âF*** Pitchfork,â and the crowd repeated after them.”
They were angry about the review of their albums presented by the publication, Pitchfork. The leader of the band, Kevin Abstract, began by apologizing for his hoarse voice. However, this wasnât apparent in his performance. The band flowed from song to song flawlessly and the crowd reciprocated by jumping and singing along with every song. Fans in the front were being bothered by security because they were going all out to the music and created a mosh pit at one point, per Brockhamptonâs request.
Band member Ameer reminded the fans that they paid money to be at the show and to ‘not let these people ruin your time.’â
The band performed songs from each album and even repeated some songâs due to popular request. They played their song, âStarâ four times in a row at the end of the show. Band member Bearface stole the show for a moment during his solo performance of âSummerâ and âTeam.â
Overall, Brockhampton has a very bright future as a band. If they keep up this rate of rapid success, Brockhampton may come to be known as the greatest boy band of all time. Who knows, maybe they will even meet their common idol, Kanye West.
The Revivalists have carved out their own unique space in music over the past ten years. Supporting their #1 single “Wish I Knew You,” The Revivalists are kicking off their “Against All Odds” U.S. tour at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg, FL on April 11, 2018!
However, the seven dudes from New Orleans are a lot more than the hit and its more than 42 million streams … though, it’s a good indication of just what kind of power this band holds.
Their fluidity and fearlessness finds them moving between jazz, funk, groove into blues, rock, soul, with a bounce of reggae and ample effervescence.”
They’ve been making music together since 2007 and have developed a wonderful sense of versatility and consistency that hasn’t staled or soured, yet.
The Revivalists are on a limited run tour this Spring, and Jannus Live is lucky enough to have a spot along the way!
The St. Petersburg, FL venue will house the septet Wednesday, January 11 at 7pm. Tickets go on sale THIS Friday, February 2 at 10am. So, pay your rent and skip drinks on Wednesday to buy these tickets! They will be scooped quickly, guaranteed. đ

The PoWoW! is one of the coolest things that the Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival does. It is unique and signature to the now three year old festival. You will not see a superstar collaboration like this on any other stage throughout festival season, or ever again, for that matter.
??????
The 2018 PoWoW! Lineup is all about bringing the bounce and groove to your Okeechobee weekend. Revel in these artists, baby.
The last name alone, Cory Henry, should be enough to pull you towards the stage. The child prodigy will bring his incredible skill on the organ for a true soul, funk experience. He has been recognized for his work with Snarky Puppy, Kirk Franklin, and his own band, The Funk Apostles, who will have their own time to shine onstage during a personal slot at the festival. Add in the 10 time Grammy winning Renaissance Queen, Chaka Khan, the indomitable flow of NYC native and certified Bada$$, the drop of BG, rhythm of Trombone Shorty, and you’ve got a MF dance party.
Okeechobee is four days of Music, Art, Camping, Yoga, Food, Wellness & Workshops all in one of the most beautiful places on earth, Sunshine Grove. Don’t miss out on your chance to be a part of the magic this year March 1st-4th. Grab your passes now!

My Hotel Year‘s tour manager just dusted off their “old tour computer” and “found so many old gems from the tour days!”. The video below is a tour promo circa 2003! I was at some of these shows, were you?
Two things:
Thank you!!! More gems please. đ
Please make my dreams come true and play a reunion show again sometime soon so I can scream “HOLD YOUR HEAD UP HIGH TONIGHT … AND I KNOOOOOOOOW WHY” with Travis Adams, Ryan Fleming, and all my friends because I wasn’t able to go to your reunion show three years ago and I might have cried a little. K Thanks!
After MHY, Travis Adams formed Field Kit and Ryan Fleming formed Copper Bones. They both rule.
So I blew the dust off my old tour computer to clear the drive and re-purpose it. I found so many old gems from the tour days! Here is a cool promo video that was done for the My Hotel Year guys. I don't remember who did this, so apologies for not knowing who to credit. If you see yourself, tag yourself! Also, feel free to share. My Hotel Year Song: "The strongest man alive"Album: "The Curse"Approx. date: June 2003

For the nostalgic, like me, here’s a My Hotel Year Spotify playlist:
It’s the year 2060 and our Galaxy is doomed. We have one hope and they’re set on bravely exploring every edge of the galaxy.
In reality, it’s 2017 and I’m sitting in the makeshift practice space of the newly minted band Electric Dawn, formerly Locus of Chiron. I wasn’t even sure I pulled into the right place when I was greeted by storage unit like buildings late on a Wednesday in September. The heavy door swings open after a tentative knock on my end and I’m soothed by the familiar smile of Josh Jauz, drummer/vocalist for the three piece.
Foam pads hodge podge the walls; as if they could stop the sound crashing out of Jauz’s intricate drum set, or quiet Eric Seibt’s epic cries, or soften John Panacciones’ leading bass…
These three may not be actually saving the galaxy but they may be saving Prog Rock.”
Eric Seibt (left) and John Panaccione (right) ? by Pat Flynn
Each musician has had their hand in creating a niche in the Orlando music scene over the years, which has helped build the genre-bending sound they’ve become known for. Jauz has been in a slew of bands in his more than ten years as a musician including, Lanterns, Public Jones (touring), StarLake, Swansinger. Vocalist/guitarist Eric Seibt was previously a part of The Manic Masquerade and Max Rebo, while bassist John Panaccione comes in with the longest resume: Etchet in Stone, Keith T and the Truth, Last Ditch Effort, Midsummers Fire, I Woke Up Early for my Funeral/Forever My Funeral.
After being in various outfits all these years, the guys learned a thing or two about what makes a band stick around and catch people’s ears. They changed their name so people could remember it more easily and also pronounce it. Their old moniker, however, is the name of their new album so as to keep people in the same frame of mind as they move forward as Electric Dawn.
Joshua Jauz on drums, ? by Jack McGowan.
Electric Dawn is dynamic because we are fusing the time signatures and technicality of Prog and Math Rock with the sound and grooves of Stoner Rock and Doom.”
-Joshua Jauz
John Pannacione on Bass, ? by Jack McGowan.
They began playing the album all the way through and my pen attempted to keep up as best it could. Violent, almost illegible scribbles was all that was left after the six track, 40 minute set of sheer sludge consumed me.
In the story, we, the three man crew, blast off in Prometheus, excavate and discover something in Titan (we purposely never say what it is we actually discover), start the trip home and breakdown in Centaur, have epic panic attacks and eventually repair broken ship and escape the Circle of Violence, undergo the long journey and barely survive in Odyssey, and arrive home and share our discovery with the world in Stolen Fire.”
-Josh Jauz
The record is meant to be played straight through, as it takes you on a journey, their journey, to navigating a new world. Sci-Fi is not a new concept for the three musicians but this concept is one they’ve been toying with for a while. Every track is a movement of epic musical proportions, and transitions you to each obstacle the characters take on.
Eric Seibt; lead vocals/guitar, ? by Jack McGowan.
The track list for Locus of Chiron is as follows:
Prometheus
Titan
Centaur
Circle of Violence
Odyssey
Stolen Fire
They recorded the album at Porch Studio in Altamonte Springs, FL where both Audiotopsy and Soulfly have made records. The song titles themselves bring you to a certain frame of mind, help prepare you for the saga ahead. The group has already released “Circle of Violence” ahead of the album as a sneak peek, and it’s a doozy.
Electric Dawn are ushering in an exciting new brand of music to our scene with an innovative science-fiction concept record set to blow you away. The album release show features a STACKED bill of incredible locals including One Drop, Fayroy, and Gary Lazer Eyes, all taking the best stage in town, Will’s Pub.
Don’t miss your chance to see this first performance live. 2018 is going to be huge for Electric Dawn.
