Witchbender pose all these questions and more on their LP 2, Crush.
Late last year, we got a nibble of what new music the five guys (I want fries, now) from Orlando had in store for us. Tour Demo 2018 wedged two fleshed out pieces of punk between our teeth with “Brand” and “Creature of Nervous Habit.” Now, I am one mouthful shy from choking on their complete album, and I fucking love it.
Crush is loud and thoughtful. “Creature of Nervous Habit” feels like howling out the passenger side window as loud as possible while your friend drives recklessly, barreling down 426. Witchbender are definitely off the leash.
“Ice Cream” is a track of sweet relief. It’s an ice pack on the back of your knees on the hottest day of summer when your A/C is broken. The cool beads of water drip down your calves and gather at the foot of your bed while you attempt to decipher if the life size vanilla swirl cone dancing in the corner of the room is a mirage or the delectable cold treat you deserve.
I want ice cream. Not just any kind of ice cream. I want the ice cream that shuts the door, closes the curtains, pulls me into bed.”
“Ice Cream” is a wonderful fever dream. Don’t even think about pinching me.
The whole album is riddled with addicting guitar and chantable mantras which are sure to make the walls shake and drip with grime during live shows.
You can catch them on tour this Spring all along the East Coast, and thank the crusty gods they’re making an appearance in Orlando. Josiah Wess, the nice guy behind Bad Balloon booking, has put together a wild night of punk of every variety with Career from Tampa, Debt Neglector, and Orl’s gem SugarPlum, who are a whole dream themselves.
Billy Howerdel and Maynard James Keenan’s modern art-rock supergroup, A Perfect Circle are returning to Orlando on Tuesday, October 30th at the CFE Arena (UCF)! They’ll be bringing their mature, avant-garde sound to Central Florida in support of their just released 4th studio album, Eat the Elephant.
Just this week the band performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Check out their performance of the new tune “TalkTalk” here:
The band’s lineup has seen some rotations over the years outside of Billy and MJK, but thankfully guitarist James Iha of Smashing Pumpkin’s fame returned for this album. Unfortunately, he isn’t currently touring, but Greg Edwards of Failure and Autolux is stepping in to cover for him.
Rounding out the lineup are bassist Matt McJunkins and drummer Jeff Freidl. I’ve seen them both perform with Maynard’s other side project Puscifer, as well as with APC last year at Rockville. McJunkins also jams occasionally with Eagles of Death Metal, and he and Freidl are both in the band The Beta Machine, who are also supporting their recent albums’s release by opening for APC. A double duty tour for a monster rhythm section.
Don’t miss this perfect union of contrary things! Stay tuned for a ticket giveaway coming soon from Shows I Go To. 😉

Glowing Nowhere | March 2018 @ Will’s Pub, Orlando, FL
Cool Grandma are cool punks just trying to shake things up a bit. The outfit features the certified skins slapping, beat keeping, and all around badassery of Vanessa Brewster who plays in Orlando’s own Wet Nurse.
Anjelica Becton is a solo artist from Melbourne, FL who can make a room go quiet and in an instant, have everyone singing back a sublime Buddy Holly cover. Her lyrics are soft, candid, and cutting all under 2 minutes and 20 seconds.
Talk With Your Hands are the party; a true indie rock groove dream They’re the soundtrack you’re playing when you leave work early on Friday to get ready for a weekend of dancing with friends.

Chapters are Orlando’s best new band. It’s hard to wrap your head around Dylan’s fret work or Kyle’s intense tempo change behind the kit, but, you’ve been warned, Math Rock is about to become your newest obsession.
American Party Machine is the most Amazin’, Blunt Blazin’, Purple Hazin’, And Hell Raisin’ Rock n Roll Band that has ever or will ever exist. WOOOOO!!!! APM is a wrestling fanatics crossover dream; Southern party rock and good ol fashioned body slamming.
Ministry rolls into the Hard Rock Live Orlando in support of their recently released fourteenth studio album, AmeriKKKant. Having been one of my all-time favorite industrial metal bands for over two decades, it was an agonizing wait in the five years since their last album had been released. This promises to be a very spirited, [&hellip
Once a year us music geeks are allowed to nerd out even more than usual. Record Store Day is for the musical sleuth in all of us. It’s the chance to scour the shelves for the obscure, the favorite, the unheard, and of course, all hail, the special release vinyl. You put back that signed edition of and leave a tear stained Death Cab for Cutie album in the basket all year round so you can splurge (TF)out this one day a year. It’s time. And Park Ave CD’s is the place.
Orlando would be so lonely without the Record & CD store on the corner of Corrine Drive. Proud home of the weird, land of the displaced.
They’re no newbies to the game. Their system is simple; come early, come prepared, and have a dang good time.
It is likely that your wait time could breach over an hour to get in the store (because they only let a certain amount of people in at a time, praise hands emoji,) but nary should you fret; your favorite online magazine weirdos will be there to keep you company with FREE DRINKS from Tito’s Handmade Vodka … we’re calling it RSD Punch!
Want to be FIRST IN LINE on Record Store Day? We’re collecting donations for Back To Nature Wildlife Refuge, a non-profit organization that serves the purpose of rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing injured or orphaned Florida Native wildlife back into their natural environment; a minimum donation of $5 will enter you in a drawing for the pole position on RSD! The winner will be allowed to enter the store and shop for 10 minutes before we officially open at 8:00am. A $5 donation will receive 1 entry, a $10 donation will receive 3 entries, and a $20 donation will receive 7 entries. Donations will be accepted up until Friday, April 20, at 5:00pm; we will draw the winner at 7:45am on Record Store Day, April 21, and the winner must be present at the shop at this time to claim the top spot. To make a donation, stop by during business hours with cash/check, or you can send funds using our PayPal address, sales@parkavecds.com (please be sure include your phone number)! For more information, email info@parkavecds.com or contact the store at (407) 447-7275.”
Last year’s Record Store Day 2017 @ Park Ave CDs got silly w/ beers, of course.
Shows I Go To will have a Record Store Day booth equipped with a PHOTOBOOTH, merch, Free RSD Punch, bad jokes, and your chance to win tickets to shows that you want to go to! Come meet the Shows I Go To Team!
Park Ave has some sweet surprises in store for you, too! ??
The initial lineup for the best festival in Florida came out a few days ago (full lineup out June 11)! What festival, you ask? The festival that doesn’t even deviate from the name, FEST!!! It takes place up in Gainesville the last weekend of October, and is home to over 400 bands and comedic acts, wrestling, 10+ venues, 1600 punks, and of course, YOU (since 2002)!
What makes FEST such a magical place to be? For one thing, it takes place in downtown Gainesville, which is normally full of University of Florida kids, but it is scheduled for this particular weekend (October 26-28) because of the Florida/Georgia football game out in Jacksonville, which allows for the punks to take over the town. Almost all of the venues are within walking distance and most shows take place in tiny, but well set up, bars. Of course, the bigger bands, such as Lagwagon or Cursive this year, will probably be playing Bo Diddley Plaza, an outdoor amphitheatre that sounds amazing no matter where you are.
What about the bands, you might ask? Well, unfortunately, there are so many bands playing that you’re not going to be able to catch ‘em all, but the beauty of FEST is there’s no such thing as a bad band playing. Just some of the bands I’m excited for aren’t even headliners, and I don’t have the room to even begin to list half of the groups I want to see, but here’s some of the majors: Onward Etc — a folk punk who writes about his life on the road after leaving home as a teenager; Dikembe — a Florida band majorly responsible for me getting into this newer wave of punk/emo; Kississippi — one of the most beautiful writers and voices this side of Julien Baker; Pkew Pkew Pkew — the Canadian answer to The Lawrence Arms; and new favorite Zeta — out of Venezuela, who combine experimental noise over hardcore music, and all sung in a beautiful Spanish growl.
This is just the beginning of the of the announcements for FEST, as they still have way more bands to announce, along with the Pre-FEST, a two day condensed version of FEST that takes place in Ybor City right before, of course. This is usually filled with special setlists and is an extra way to see your favorites even more, or catch bands you would miss later on at the main FEST. Even better, FEST offers a shuttle that takes you from Tampa up to Gainesville, so you don’t have to make that drive.
