If there’s one dance party that’s simply irresistible, it’s hosted by Zach Deputy. With an event titled “Dance ‘Til You Fall”, I had to find some time on a busy Thursday night in mid-September to make my way to The Social. Also on the lineup was Ballyhoo! sharing the stage with Zach in a 100% co-headline fashion. Opening up the show were Sun Dried Vibes and Bumpin Uglies, I missed both unfortunately, but I arrived promptly at 10:00 p.m. just as Zach was starting up. Time to put it in the boogie!
Zach D is one of my favorite solo artists in the world. He’s a one-man band of island-infused drum n’ bass gospel ninja soul. In case you’re not familiar, he is very well known in the festival community and jam scene, but his sounds can be all encompassing within the musical encyclopedia. Whether it’s a nonsense rocker about chicken pot pie, a sweet ballad about a girl named Renee, a classical beatbox jam that goes into the morning (or into the night), or even a tropical jam about twisty hurricanes, he plays with next level precision intended to get the room moving and feel whatever positive emotion is just waiting to be unleashed.
I absolutely love seeing his shows and watching him magically make all the sounds of a full band with his ludicrous loop skills. It can be really hypnotizing — sometimes just watching; but eventually, you snap out of it and next thing you know, you’re dancing like there’s no tomorrow. At your next Zach D show, I recommend getting on the floor as close as possible to become one with the amorphous dance blob. This time, however, I opted to hang in the back of the room where there was a little more breathing and dancing area, and also to comfortably have conversations with a few long-time-no-see friends. Zach played nearly an hour, which went by way too fast. Ballyhoo! was next but I had to hit the road. I’m sure they closed the place down properly, though.
Zach has just announced all new tour dates (some with Keller Williams) so go here for full list of dates throughout October and November and check him out whenever and wherever. Zach always comes back to Central Florida, he can’t stay away for too long. Peep my coverage from just a few months ago back in February where he and The Hip Abduction opened for The Expendables at House of Blues. In less than two weeks, Zach will be performing at the Bear Creek Bayou festival in New Orleans from September 30 to October 1. If you have the means, I highly recommend hitting up this funk fest in its new location, relocated from Suwannee.
Here’s a short clip of two Zach D tunes from the show, “Into the Morning” and “Scrambled Eggs,” the latter can be found on his latest album and fourth studio album Wash It In the Water, released September 9. The refreshing album has 11 amazing tracks which are sure to infuse your mind and body with island calypso waves fused with hip-hop and funky folk, guaranteed to wash your soul squeaky clean.
