Show three was in Valasske Mezirici, Czech Republic. With a name that no one could pronounce, and a country that was referred to by Stefan as “the wild east,” our collective expectation for the show was admittedly low. We couldn’t have been more wrong. It was a DIY space that had a room that, fully packed, help in a little more than 100 people. The first door was the room with the stage. There was a side door to walk through which would bring you to an outside area that had a grill and foosball table (this was the beginning of an addiction). There was a green room for us and then a back room where they were serving beer. The green room was filled with food and a large American flag. Stanley, our promoter, was one of the few that spoke English but it’s amazing how far a few words can get you accompanied with smiles and nods.
There were two opening bands on this show, then us. The first of the two bands did something to disrespect the venue and Stanley, so nothing more will be said of them. The second band was called Strikeout, they were a Title Fight-esq band. They had a lot of energy and put together a great set.
By the time we began, the room was at capacity. It was emotionally electrifying. People were crowd surfing with only a few feet between their lifted bodies and the concrete ceiling above them. Each pause between songs was filled with loud cheers. I am extremely proud of how we somehow mustered up enough energy to match the crowd. As I stated in Blog 1, it’s always easier to play a better set when a crowd is into it. We fed off of it and thrived. Czech Republic is a hidden gem of great beer and a very supportive scene.
After the show, we went to Stanley’s amazing home that was filled with ever arcade game possible. It was a multi level bachelor pad straight out of my teenage dream. As we shared stories over video games, he told us more about his country and strong beliefs. A story came up about how he beat the shit out of Nazis twice his size at a music festival. He is a true hero of mine and I am very proud to have shared time with him.
Every wall of every venue we have played has been plastered with anti-Nazi stickers and pleas for gender equality. Art has been respected and encouraged, and the suppression of ideas has been highly frowned upon.
Everyone here has been very open to talking about the past and current mistakes of our world leaders. As long as we, as Americans, have approached their conversations with open minds and humility, their receptiveness has been more friendly than I ever expected. There is a strong sentiment, everywhere, to never forget the past ensuring mistakes are not repeated.
This is a beautiful place with beautiful ideas. We are all excited to see what else is in store for the next few weeks. -Nick.
