Spafford is a quartet from Prescott, Arizona… and they jam. It’s true, says so on their website in the “About” section. In fact, that’s all the about section says besides contact info.
This funky little band formed in 2009 and is emerging from the matrix of Phish, Umphrey’s McGee, Disco Biscuits, and about five other jam bands, quickly climbing the ranks in the scene and stepping up huge. It’s easy to lose yourself in their composed and improvisational blends of rock, funk, jazz, reggae, ska, and electro-pop. Their latest release, Abaculus: An Improvisational Experience, was recorded in a single take and is presented as an hour-long single track.
I watched them rock thousands of faces on two seperate occasions two weekends ago at the Suwannee Hulaween festival at Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida. I had never seen them play live before. They were the band I was most excited to see, I was not dissapointed. They solidified their spot as one of my current favorites that I just can’t get enough of.
I was left wanting so much more and figured they wouldn’t get back to Florida for a while. Boy was I wrong.
Spafford has announced their upcoming Winter Tour… “For Amusement Only Tour 2018″… which has 17 stops starting in Minneapolis on January 11. The tour bounces around the Northeast, Midwest and Southeast for about three weeks before ending up down south for FOUR FLORIDA DATES! The consecutive four-night Florida run starts at Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday, January 31, then rolls up the west cost to Crowbar in Tampa, followed by The Social in Orlando, and finishing east side at Jack Rabbits in Jacksonville on February 3. I plan to catch ’em all!
Tickets go on sale Friday, November 10 at 10 a.m. ET.
Spafford is Brian Moss (guitar/vocals), Jordan Fairless (bass/vocals), Andrew “Red” Johnson (keys/vocals), Cameron Laforest (drums/percussion/vocals), and Chuck Johnson (lighting designer/lyricist).
And can I mention their sense of humor is awesome?! I didn’t realize it right away, but I’m pretty sure their Halloween costume was Lloyd and Harry from Dumb and Dumber when they went to the charity ball dressed in orange and blue suits….
