We pulled up, and I had to check the time. Never had I seen a line outside and into the alley at Bayboro Brewing for a show. Especially only a little after 7:30pm on Saturday January 11th. I knew that we were there on time to see my girl, DJ RisKay spin some tracks to get this crowd hyped. We filled into line. The people behind us were there on time so they could see her too! We were in for a night, a stage filled with so much talent, and a room filled with so much love for music and the musicians at large and here in the ‘Burg. PYTHON is a cultivation of musical prowess and energy. Eric Benny Bloom, of Lettuce, brings the room alive with his ethereal trumpet and soulful vocals. BIGYUKI on the keys knows how to please, with his jazzy classical and hip hop influences and a little bit of everything else in between. Brad Miller kept that bass on lock and never played a note that wasn’t meant to be there. Drummer for Lettuce, Adam Deitch, held it all down and brought the dynamics to another level, striking when he saw fit. We were here for PYTHON.
I had the privilege of seeing this quartet last year at the Dunedin Brewery’s Moon Tower. When I saw that Unusual Noise was bringing them back together, AND in my backyard, AND on my birthday weekend, the answer was yes. After getting a free Grateful Dead themed pack of rolling papers at the door, we were in! It was cold for a winter’s night in Florida, and I was excited to turn up the heat and finally get into this much anticipated show.
It smelled of smoked meats and tasty treats, and all I could see were smiles. Patrick and I didn’t waste time at the main bar and went straight to the entrance of the North Room. We were pleasantly surprised they had their back bar open and recently received their liquor license. We grabbed our drinks and faced the music. Mixing some classics with some heavy hitters, RisKay had the crowd bumpin’ and jiving. Joe Marcinek couldn’t help himself and had to play along for a song or two. It really was a vibe. The projections and visuals by The Nautilus Project above the insightfully designed whiskey barrel walls were entrancing as RisKay controlled the house from behind her altar of tunes.

Brain Emoji was next. I managed to step outside in the Biergarten for some cool fresh air during the set break. I had the chance to catch up and see some of the people I have grown to love in our community, simply because we just like good music and go to all the best shows. I was excited to see these Brain Emoji cats, and heard them start. Once inside, I stashed my jacket in the whiskey barrel wall and went back into the crowd. Joe Marcinek, artist at large, hailed the guitar, Mike Bryant slayed the keys, Vinny Svoboda slapped da bass and ‘dat dude on drums, Yral Morris, didn’t miss a beat. It was exciting to see some of my favorite local musicians playing with Joe. Joe has played nationally and alongside so many great performers throughout the years. I have seen him live and followed his music for years. Every time I see him, it’s exciting. You never know who else he will perform with. The dedication and talent it takes to shred guitar with the best in the scene is unmatched. Brain Emoji brought the funk and the jams. Marcinek nailed his guitar solos, and Mike kept it fresh with his keys. We were all feeling groovy on the dance floor thanks to Vinny holding it down on the bass. I couldn’t help but eye the drum kit Yral was playing as he stayed so comfortably in the pocket. No way was that Deitch’s kit, flown here from Colorado, and I had a feeling it was not Yral’s. That snare popped and the toms and the bass sparkled. My moves were smooth and I was in tune with the funk and grooves of Brain Emoji.

It was time for another drink and maybe a bite to eat. I managed to snag some tots off of another one of my favorite local drummers and his wife who were just outside the North Hall. I got the lowdown on who’s sick Tama kit was up on stage, and it warmed my heart to know more of the inner workings of our music community coming together to make great shows like this happen. Bayboro Brewing is one of my favorite local venues in St. Pete. They have cultivated their presence in the music community, and it has been a privilege to be up on that stage myself. Now that my mission for a drink, food and drum intel was satiated it was time to slither my way up front for PYTHON.
They came in hot and Adam kicked it off with a funky beat as Eric Benny Bloom hyped the crowd and introduced the band. Brad Miller was grooving on the bass and the whole crowd was moving. Then BIGYUKI on the keys came in with a sound that the laser lights around us would be making if they made noise, creating a great build up for a drop and then a funky bass line. Finally, Eric Benny Bloom came in on his trumpet hitting the perfect pitch and using some reverb and a bit of a wah pedal to create a crystal clear sound. That was the sound I was waiting for. I had a flashback of my favorite time seeing Lettuce, on Jam Cruise 18, and then, the many more times I’ve seen them since then. I soaked it all in.
It didn’t take long to find my friends up front and make new ones. I pulled a rookie move and forgot my earplugs. Yet, I wound up right behind the same drum kit I had been eyeing all night. Luckily I was unbothered by the volume. It was here that I met Hunter Nicole Davis, the talented photographer who captured the night. I was in awe of the musicians that made this impressive PYTHON come to life. The oldest rituals known to man were of those worshiping the Python in the caves of South Africa. You could feel the power and control they had in this time and space. I was charmed.

BIGYUKI was a huge part of making this “Nu Nu” happen. His use of the classic piano sound infused with the unusual noise, similar to that of an arcade game were distinguishable. We weren’t sure where this PYTHON was going with this, but it felt as if we were making our way through and up and down and around towards something great; and great it was. PYTHON went from a sensual jazz to a latin vibe and then brought us back around to its roots. Eric Benny Bloom’s trumpet was ethereal. Now, we were floating. Then, they ended the song, and we were brought back to this reality.

After some pleasantries, it was all business baby. The horn riff was familiar and so was the hook. The groove was driving and then cool and collected. I heard the Tribe Called Quest’s chords being riffed. This was suited for Deitch with his love for hip hop and his roots in New York. Then Eric Benny Bloom came in with his trumpet sounding like a jazz riff straight out of NOLA. They continued to create this unique funk I’ve never heard before. Brad Miller had been walking in syncopation with his bass, perfectly intertwined with Adam’s rhythm. Then BIGYUKI took us all on a ride through Yuki-land, then brought us back to those original melodic minor chords from A Tribe Called Quest’s, “Electric Relaxation.” Man was that cool.
It was time for more vocals from the soulful voice of Mr. Bloom, but not without a beautiful classic piano intro from BIGYUKI. After a bit of brass from Eric and well delivered vocals, we knew we had to “Keep Goin On.” The melding of jazz, dub, and funk had us on another plane. As soon as we realized where this song had us, PYTHON would change direction, loosen its grip, and bring us deeper into the jungle.
I was hooked. The next few songs did not disappoint. I was happy to be boogieing with RisKay and our friends. I could feel the way we would collectively sway and respond to the music we were a part of. I loved the arpeggios that BIGYUKI was laying down and Adam’s syncopated snare accents that gave this song a bit of a Samba feel. There was something so familiar about what they played all night, yet I had never heard things combined this way and certainly not live, except for the only other time I have seen them, a year ago.

“Rock Steady” had us rockin’ all night long. We got to bask in Eric’s soulful vocals and received a phenomenal bass solo from Brad. Key changes and shifts, beats being dropped and added, and then we get more of the exquisite trumpet from Eric Benny Bloom that told us all that we are in the right place. Then, BIGYUKI went into one of the most astounding piano solos I believe I have ever witnessed. The way his hands and fingers danced over the keys was captivating. The rest of the band fell quiet, the crowd was captivated. He created a dynamic and intricate crescendo with the sound of a grand piano and had everyone in the whole room silently enjoying and anticipating the next level on this winding, mystical road. And then, “We were born to rock, steady, rockin’ with it all night long.” I certainly wanted to rock until the break of dawn.

Eric Benny Bloom snapped me out of my trance, and gave YUKI the credit where it was due, reminded us that the PYTHON is in the building and introduced the next song written by Deitch, ‘Swirls’. It started off really drum and bass heavy. Then I heard that dub Lettuce sound weave its way through. If you were to follow Eric Benny Bloom’s notes transcribed on paper, it would be a rollercoaster of ups and downs and swirling around. BIGYUKI takes us elsewhere with his otherworldly sound effects. Miller on the bass, never missed a note, and held the melody together with sinuous bass lines. It ended with a snare.

We were reaching our peak. Then another banger. This rhythm was drilled into our heads. Then BIGYUKI took us on a masterfully coiled journey through time and reality. This PYTHON had become like something out of Space Invaders and we were going to make it to the next level. Adam Deitch drilled into this rhythm, still pounding, and keeping us grounded. At this point I was stomping my feet and letting the primal dance flow out of me. The crowds’ cheers when the song ended began to sound like wild animals calling and howling at the moon.
We were given the grace of a “no fake out” ending to this show and got what we came for. Eric Benny Bloom made sure to let us know that PYTHON will play two more, not just one. “Drunk Funk” written by Adam Deitch, was an appropriate follow up to all that just happened. Adam’s syncopated rhythm and triplet style beats along with Brad Miller’s groovy bass line, made for some dub-funk like none ever imagined. I was feeling the drunk in the funk, simply by the chord and rhythm changes, yet still so craftily done. It was all intentional, and catchy.

These talented and inspiring musicians are all in Florida to get a little sunshine and have a good time with all of us at Bayboro Brewing. PYTHON closed out the night with their rendition of “Everybody Loves the Sunshine,” by Roy Ayers, in their own unique style. A soulful and feel good song to end the night. We got our last brass from the snake charmer himself. Each one of these musicians has a distinct style and brings an incredible dynamic to the stage. Truly communicating as a powerful PYTHON to be worshiped and admired for centuries to come. They left us wanting more. I can’t wait to see what is next for them!
