Halloween is hands down the best holiday of the year, right? The costumes, parties, and fun just can’t be topped. Unless you say the words, Suwannee Hulaween, three times fast. Then things get crazy. This spooktacular celebration of art and music is one you can’t miss! This year is arguably its biggest yet as we dare to explore the tenth Suwannee Hulaween. It’s here you can immerse yourself in a world of new art and music that will change the way you look at things. Here are five acts that might change how you feel about music after Hulaween ‘23! GET PASSES HERE!
5) Smino
Christopher Smith Jr., is a 31 year old St. Louis native who is climbing the hip-hop charts. Smino pairs his original Southern sound with a neo-soul vibe that is simply unmatched. If you’ve been paying attention, the 2017 EP ‘blkswn’ helped put the young rapper on the map, while his latest record, ‘LUV for Rent’ (Oct. ‘22) is about to launch him out of this world. Smino’s music plugs right into your heart, whether it’s about bad love, petty love, obsessive love, real good love, family love. Swerve your way to The Hallows on (Saturday @ 11) to see Smino perform “Z4L,” “90 Proof,” and “Wild Irish Roses.”
4) Channel Tres (DJ)
Sheldon Jerome Young is a stiff drink. He’s the perfect cocktail of music you can enjoy all night long. A shot of Detroit techno, a dash of Chicago house, and a splash of West Coast rap is the perfect blend for a banging set. He has been hailed as the next wave of industry nonconformists like Jpegmafia, Tyler, the Creator, Duckwrth. In addition, he’s collaborated with Hula alumni like Disclosure, Tove Lo, and Robyn. He even counts Elton John as a fan! Glow up to The Amphitheater Stage on (Friday @ 11:30) for a little “Diamond Therapy” and “I’ve Been in Love.”
3) Atlin Gun
Amsterdam is sending their critically acclaimed Anatolian rock and Turkish psychedelic folk band to hang out with us! Their debut album On (2018) raised some eyebrows and a year later the band earned a prestigious Grammy Award nomination for “Best World Album” with it’s sophomore LP Gece (2019). Amazingly enough, these guys were formed through the use of a “want ad,” bassist Jasper Verhulst posted in 2016. You can find their original psychedelic rock, deep funk, synthpop, cosmic reggae and so much more (Thursday @ 6:30) at The Hallows Stage.
2) Eddie Roberts and The Lucky Strokes
We haven’t had the privilege of seeing even just a piece of The New Mastersounds in the US since the pandemic. Until now. Guitarist Eddie Roberts leads his new collection of musicians on a quest to close out this year’s festival in style. This new quartet first teamed up to perform Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom’s 20th Anniversary party in Denver, CO, and recorded a full-length record at Color Red Studios the next day to bottle the magic they had created. Catch this speedy funk player and his cohorts at the Campground Stage (Sunday @ 10pm).
1) Pretty Lights Live Band
The five year wait for Derek Vincent Smith and his full band is over. Veteran producer, Pretty Lights boasts eight studio albums with huge hits like “More Important Than Michael Jordan,” “Hot Like Sauce,” and of course, his famous Etta James sample song, “Finally Moving.” The nine-stop nationwide Pretty Lights tour brings two big fat sets to Hula this year. These synth monsters seeth with scary good glitchy hip-hop beats, buzzing synth lines, and vintage funk and soul samples. Prepare yourself for a stage full of musicians who are ready to take over the Meadow, fusing hot beats, with cool samples and a ton lights and lasers (Saturday @ Midnight | Sunday @ 6:30).
