TWLOHA Turns 10: An Evening of Songs, Conversation, and Hope | House of Blues Orlando | Saturday, April 2, 2016

by • March 30, 2016

To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA) is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire, and invest directly into treatment and recovery. Enter the giveaway contest below to WIN 2 TICKETS to celebrate their 10-years of helping people get through life and saving lives. This event will be an extra-special version of their “HEAVY AND LIGHT” format, “an evening of songs, conversation, and hope.” Everyone in the room will leave with a list of resources, people, and places they can turn to for help. Their friends Jon Foreman (of Switchfoot), Matt Wertz, and Renee Yohe (of Bearcat) will be there, along with spoken word poets Sierra DeMulder and Tonya Ingram. And… Arizona pop punk band The Summer Set will also be there!

Their founder, Jamie Tworkowski, didn’t set out to start a nonprofit organization. All he wanted to do was help a friend and tell her story. When Jamie met Renee Yohe, she was struggling with addiction, depression, self-injury, and suicidal thoughts. He wrote about the five days he spent with her before she entered a treatment center, and he sold T-shirts to help cover the cost. When she entered treatment, he posted the story on MySpace to give it a home. The name of the story was “To Write Love on Her Arms.” The title also represented a goal  — to believe that a better life was possible.

But it was more than just a story. The words and the life it represented shed light on the reality of contrast — pain and peace, addiction and sobriety, regret and freedom. Soon Jamie and his friends were answering messages from people around the world. They longed to lift the heavy weight of depression. They wanted to be free from addiction or self-injury, to stay alive and live fully. They were mourning those they’d lost to such struggles, and they reached out to ask what they could do to bring hope to their communities. They sold t-shirts to help pay for Renee’s treatment, but what could they offer those people who were hurting? Jamie knew he had stumbled onto a conversation that couldn’t be ignored in 2007, TWLOHA became an official non-profit organization.

On March 30, it will have been 10 years since Jon Foreman wore the very first TWLOHA shirt on stage at a Switchfoot concert in Boca Raton. At the time, he was supporting a friend who was helping a friend. It would fast become a bigger thing, and not for any brilliance but because so many people could relate to the story of Renee Yohe. People felt a sense of permission in learning of the struggles of another. Maybe they could share theirs. Maybe they were not alone. Now they are closing in on a decade of pointing to hope and help, a decade of breaking the silence.

TWLOHA is treating March 30 as their birthday, but they’ll do it in person a few nights later on Saturday, April 2, at the House of Blues in Orlando. It will be a celebration of their journey and history, looking back, being thankful, and also looking ahead. And they are definitely going to celebrate, because if one person chose to stay alive, that is worth a celebration.
