I have wanted to see Lettuce live since my friend Dylan introduced me to them years ago. I knew I had to get tickets when they announced that their “A Funk Odyssey” tour would be coming to House of Blues. These guys are seriously the funkiest band on the planet. They haven’t played a headlining show in Orlando since I have been a fan, so this is long overdue. Lettuce will be at House of Blues Orlando on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 (win tickets below).
These guys have played every major festival on the map. Two years ago they were the backing band at one of Bonnaroo’s late night jam sessions. Although I wasn’t there to see it in person, I was able to catch the live stream and it was one of the most rockin’ shows ever.
Lettuce started playing together all the way back in 1992 when they met at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. They were all fans of old school funk music like Herbie Hancock, Earth, Wind and Fire, and Tower of Power. Lettuce got their name from when they were first starting out constantly asking club owners and other musicians to “Let us play”.
They soon developed large followings in New York, Chicago and even Tokyo. In 2002, Lettuce finally released their first major album called Outta Here. The band has released three more full-length albums since 2002, including their live album Live at Blue Note Tokyo. Lettuce is one of those bands where the album just doesn’t do them justice and the live performance is where it’s at (See Below).
Make sure to get there early to check out Break Science who will be opening the show. They are a Brooklyn-based electronic duo who has worked with everyone from Lettuce to Wu-Tang Clan. I don’t know much about this guys but I have heard nothing but good things.
