Kung Fu Preview 1

KUNG FU | Coming to Red Lion Pub, Winter Park, FL | Wednesday, December 9, 2015

by • December 6, 2015

No, this isn’t a touring class about how to kick some ass, it’s a funky tour with some groove and jazz. Proud to be firmly installed in the new-funk movement, Kung Fu is quickly popularizing their unique sonic contribution, blurring the line between intense electro-fusion and blistering dance arrangements. Come flex your moves when they bring their Winter 2015 tour to Red Lion Pub in Winter Park on Wednesday, December 9, 2015. Opening the show are Orlando locals Leisure Chief and Miami peeps, Electric Kif. This is the first of four Florida shows which include December 10 at The Funky Biscuit in Boca Raton, December 11 at 1904 Music Hall in Jacksonville, and December 12 at Crowbar in Tampa.

Kung Fu Preview 2

Kung Fu features Tim Palmieri (guitar), Robert Somerville (tenor sax), Beau Sasser (keyboards), Chris DeAngelis (bass guitar), and Adrian Tramontano (drums/percussion).  The powerhouse quintet’s live show is lethally funky, explosively jaw dropping, and musically mesmerizing.  The band draws on influences such as early Headhunters and Weather Report, and merges those ideas with a contemporary EDM informed sensibility.  Imagine 70’s funk-fusion meets a modern dance party! Watch this video of my favorite Kung Fu tune, “Gung Ho,” from the Aura Music Festival 2013. Thanks to Adam Firtel for the video!

Leisure Chief (one of my personal favorite local Orlando bands, which I have seen countless times) is a new-wave, musical powerhouse drawing influence from funk, jazz, fusion, hip hop, and soul, yet going beyond the confines of any one genre. Inventive compositions — paired with the spirit of improvisation, jazz harmony, and hard grooves — distinguish them as a noteworthy group of musicians bringing forth a refreshing sense of originality. They will be playing with their full band (which will soon feature exciting new additions!) and will be raising money for an upcoming album release (details TBA). Leisure Chief are no strangers to music festivals and will be playing the upcoming Hometeam New Years Rally (Dec. 31 to Jan. 3) and Little Econ Love Fest (Feb. 11-14, 2016), both at Maddox Ranch in Lakeland, Florida. Most recently, the band broke new ground, playing the opening set for Suwannee Hulaween Music Festival 2015. Watch Leisure Chief’s full set video from Suwannee Hulaween, via The Sober Goat.

Electric Kif captures the energy of execution in the all of the previously mentioned genres. Their powerful live show brings an unparalleled energy and sound to the stage and displays a new experience every night. The quartet has traveled to Costa Rica several times for the RainFest Music Festival and has played other festivals such as Frankestock and Carnaval on the Mile, one of Miami’s better known music festivals. They just released their first EP, Take Your Time, released April 27th 2015. Check out this video of Electric Kif’s full set from Red Lion Pub on a quiet night back in September, the one and only time I have seen them. I expect this show with Kung Fu will bring a packed house with lots of beautiful dancing people.
