Islands brought their Canadian indie rock to The Social in Orlando, FL with all-girl Brooklyn alt-rock band, TEEN and we caught Live Photos of them both! Islands formed in 2005 after The Unicorns split in 2004. As Donnie mentioned in our ticket giveaway, “not the Unicorns, but close enough for now.” Close enough indeed!
This was my first time seeing Islands. Towards the end of their set, I realized it was the kind of music that made me want to get on a board and ride into happiness until I forgot about life and it’s problems. The opener, TEEN, was a steady moving alternative rock band that displayed stoicism. I also found it interesting that their drummer had a sample pad in place of a rack-tom.
As the night moved forward, Islands lead singer, Nicholas Thorburn, took me with him lyrically, through his often emotional ups and downs.
Particularly, down, when the room sang along to the sad tune, “Can’t Feel My Face” from Islands 2012 release A Sleep & A Forgetting. It begins “I miss my wife. I miss my best friend.” and I caught the melancholy action on the Shows I Go To instagram. Don’t forget to check out the beautiful live photos Matthew took below. (I’m totally diggin’ Islands lead singer Nicholas Thorburn’s pants)
