Formed in Isla Vista, California, Iration are a group of solid musicians with a deep-rooted reggae influence that is fused with elements of rock and pop to create smooth original sounds. “We’re all about luv”, states the band. The group is made up of members Joseph Dickens (Drums), Joseph King (Engineer), Cayson Peterson (Keyboard/Synth), Micah Pueschel (Guitar/Lead Vocals), Adam Taylor (Bass), and Micah Brown (Guitar/Vocals). All of the members met while growing up in Hawaii but formed the band after reconnecting in Santa Barbara, CA – the exception being Micah Brown who officially joined the group in 2014. These Hawaiian-bred musicians look forward to spreading their original sound and Aloha spirit all the while never forgetting to get a surf in when possible. They play a mix of reggae, dub, rock and are known for playing a lot of sunshine reggae. Also, the rootsy, romantic side to their music can definitely excite the ladies on the dance floor.

The group released their Hotting Up album in summer of 2015. The album’s lead single “Reelin” debuted at #1 on the iTunes reggae singles chart. Hotting Up is the next step in the progression of their sound. It’s the most complete album they’ve ever made. The songs, performances, production and end result have never been better. It’s a beat-driven uptempo record, but still contains the signature drum & bass, rocking guitars and catchy melodies/harmonies that distinguish their sound. And here’s a video of them performing one of my favorites and one of their biggest hits, “Time Bomb” at the West Beach Music Festival in Santa Barbara, California back in 2009.

Hirie is one of Hawaii’s newest upcoming artist. Born in the Phillipines and raised in Italy, she spent most of her of life in Oahu, Hawaii. Her 2013 self-titled debut album mixes her silky, smooth voice with roots, reggae and pop to create her own unique style. Unlike many solo reggae artists, Hirie records with a live band as opposed to using pre-recorded mixtapes. The band includes Hirie (Lead Vocals, Guitar, Uke), Chris Hampton (Saxophone, Melodica, Accordion), Andrew McKee (Trombone, Guitar, Didgeridoo, Percussion), Andy Flores (Bass), Blaine Dillinger (Lead Guitar), Chetan Chanana (Drums) and Devin Welsch (Sub. Keys). Here’s the official music video for the album’s biggest single, “Sensi Boy.”

The Expanders are one of those bands that employ skillful vocal harmonies in their music, and they do it very distinctly and brilliantly. The end result is a breezy, relaxed sound with a silky, echoing flow that is almost unreal. If swaying palm trees could make music, this is probably what it would sound like. This is one of the coolest new reggae bands I’ve heard lately, and one I would recommend to anyone who needs help turning around a bad day or making a good day even brighter. The five-piece band comprised of John Asher (Drums, Vocals), John Butcher (Guitar, Vocals), Roy Fishell (Organs), Chiquis Lozoya (Bass, Vocals), and Devin Morrison (Guitar, Vocals). The Expanders’ new album Hustling Culture was released June 16, 2015, on indie tastemaker label Easy Star Records. Check out this video of them performing the track “The Horse” from the new album at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg when they opened up for Tribal Seeds.
