GMF is back, baby! Tampa’s favorite event, Gasparilla Music Festival, returns to Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park April 29th & 30th boasting a treasure chest of sparkling artists. Headlining Saturday night is Run the Jewels. A hip-hop duo featuring the talents of El-P and Killer Mike. Sunday’s headliner is the nation’s premiere Grateful Dead cover band, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead. Drummer Joe Russo and his band of merry pranksters take the classic songs to their breaking point. GMF’s supporting cast includes electro-funk duo Chromeo, Indie-rocker Local Natives, and folk music from Rising Appalachia. Get ready for LA’s electro-pop trio Cannons (originally from FL!, interview HERE!), 80’s alternative jammers Big Head Todd & The Monsters, as well as Flipturn, The 502’s, Shelby Sol, Pusha Preme, Shevonne & The Force, Cope, Minim, Summer Hoop, Earthtonez, Whale Feral, George Pennington & The Odyssey, Mt. Zion Gospel Choir, Tampa Metro Youth Orchestra. This is just the initial lineup and more artists are to be announced before the late April event date. Gasparilla Music Fest 2023 Lineup

Run the Jewels dropped their debut album, Run The Jewels, in April of 2013. Now, a decade and three albums later, Run the Jewels are celebrating their 10th anniversary with concerts in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Tampa, Florida. Each of their performances are instant classics as these alchemists harness their chemistry to create gold right in front of your eyes.

Also ten years old, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead pushes the envelope when it comes to “playing Dead.” This fiery six-piece band includes the bassist from Ween, Drew Dreiwitz, as well as Tom Hamilton of Brothers Past, Ghost Light, and American Babies. Russo was the drummer for Furthur, a Grateful Dead band formed by Bob Weir and Phil Lesh. Marco Benevento (keys) simply won’t stay on task – to the benefit of everyone listening.

Gasparilla Music Festival is a family affair that encourages all ages to attend their non-profit event that benefits the musical education of Tampa’s youth. Thank you for supporting the Gasparilla Music Foundation!

Changes are on the horizon for our beloved GMF. This year the festival will slim down to fit into Curtis Hixon Park alone as the city deals with water intrusion issues. “Kiley Garden, [the upstairs portion of GMF], is currently unable to be used … due to water intrusion issues that have been identified through an exploratory evaluation,” said city spokesperson Lauren Rozyla. “As a precautionary measure, the city is not allowing any events in the space until we receive full approval from an engineer to put loads on the top surface of the structure. General pedestrian traffic is allowed.” What’s more is that GMF’s longtime talent buyer, program director, and co-founder Phil Benito is no longer booking bands for the nonprofit festival which advocates for local music education and places refurbished instruments into the hands of local school kids. While GMF has been hush as to the reason for the departure, they have divulged that GMF 2024 will take place Friday-Sunday, Feb. 18 at Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park.
