Aesop Rock was at the forefront of the new wave of underground and alternative hip hop acts that emerged during the late 1990s and early 2000s. He says he acquired his name from a movie he acted in with some friends. His character’s name was Aesop and it just sort of stuck. The rock part came later just from throwing it in rhymes.

He recently started skateboarding again, hitting up the skate parks working to get his skills back up. Before his hobby of making rap songs turned into a paying gig that turned into an accidental 20-year long career, skating and drawing (which he’s been doing more of, too) were his big passions. Going back to things like that is a way to help process everything that happens in life over the years and help us figure out the person we’ve become. That’s what he’s trying to do with his seventh solo album, The Impossible Kid. In February 2016, Aesop Rock released a music video for the song “Rings” and the album was released on April 29, 2016. The reflective album covers childhood memories, some family stuff, some friend stuff, some music stuff, baffling stuff, and coping with getting older.
