Brad Lauretti and Sadie Frederick have just left the studio recording the fourth This Frontier Needs Heroes album. The folk duo based in Jacksonville, FL has become known for their hard work playing songs of love and protest. Hard work has shaped who they are as artists and informed how they approach their craft.
If the new single is any indication, the latest record will be straightforward and populist. Which makes sense, considering Lauretti and Frederick wrote most of the songs at the Stetson Kennedy Songwriter Residency, where Woody Guthrie penned eighty songs. As Lauretti told us recently, “I was definitely channeling that spirit.”
The spirit of Guthrie is clearly accessed on “Free Market Music.” It is a song about giving musicians their due, paying them what they are worth, and not taking their art for granted.
The tune is catchy despite its more serious message. A message that gets at the heart of some prevalent issues in America. The gist, pay musicians (and all working people) what they are worth.
