Just when you thought things couldn’t get more drama-laden in Hip Hop music…yeah, just give it a week. The past seven days have been filled with enough intrigue, beef and weirdness to make a Hip Hop telenovella. Have a taste of the week that was in some of the most popular stories of the Hip Hop holiday season. (Ambrosia for Heads)
J. COLE MINI DOCS LEADING TO HBO FULL DOCUMENTARY
Last week, news broke of Cole’s Homecoming documentary on HBO. This week, Cole and his team released the first of several mini-movies leading up to the December 9 premiere. The first episode, entitled “F**k Money, Spread Love” premiered earlier this week. Judging from what we saw in that, this Hip Hop doc is shaping up to be one for the ages.
N.W.A. HEADED TO ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME
Who would have thought that 2015 would have been a banner year for arguably the most controversial Hip Hop group of all time? And yet, here we are! It is official: pioneering Hip Hop group NWA is going to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place April 8, with the bad boys from Compton being chosen over artists like Janet Jackson and Chaka Khan.
TIMBALAND TO DROP KING STAYS KING MIXTAPE
A mixtape reportedly featuring unreleased music from Aaliyah as well as tracks with Rich Homie Quan and Young Thug? When it comes to Timbaland albums, it’s best to take what you can get. So the King Stays King joint will be dropping on Christmas in preparation for the super producers’ next album, Textbook Timbo, in 2016.
RICK ROSS TO PEN AN ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
GABOS. Game Ain’t Based On Sympathy. That’s the title of the new movie being penned by none other than Rick Ross. Apparently based on recollections from Ross’s life, GABOS is inspired by shows like the currently popular Narcos and the classic Miami Vice. Which might be hard to pull off, since Ross’s true gangsta has been brought into questions several times after it was found out that he was a corrections officer. Still, maybe this will serve as a great form of escapism. We can only hope so.
AZEALIA BANKS ARRESTED ON ASSAULT CHARGES
Is she just trolling for attention, or misunderstood? Maybe it’s both. Regardless, Azealia Banks is back in the spotlight not for her music, but for her behavior. Apparently the incident took place in New York’s Meatpacking District, with Banks punching and biting a security guard at a nighttime spot called Up&Down. Will Banks ever get back on track with making relevant Hip Hop that we can truly appreciate? We just have to Kanye shrug at that one.
MARTIN SHKRELI ARRESTED ON FRAUD CHARGES
As if purchasing a $2 million Wu-Tang Clan album and allegedly trying to bail Bobby Shmurda out of prison, controversial drug CEO Shkreli now finds himself on the other side of the long arm of the law. While he was popping off at RZA and the rest of the Wu online, the Feds were apparently building a case of fraud against him. Maybe hiking up the price of that precious AIDS drug may not have been the best idea, after all.
