Dr Dog St. Petersburg Preview

Dr. Dog w/ SWIMM | State Theatre, St. Petersburg, Fl | Monday, September 28, 2015

by • September 24, 2015

The funky pop flavors of Dr. Dog have invaded my senses, and now I can’t think of a better way to spend a Monday evening. Chilling, grooving, and shaking along to the Philadelphia funksters is a blend of time travel with the proper modern day amenities we can’t live without.

Think psychedelic elements of the ’60s with the thumping rhythm of modern indie. Dr. Dog is a climbing project of almost two decades, shaped almost like a prism with every unique track. Sometimes, it’s a little bit of folk weaved in “The Breeze,” with sweeping, lulling energy. Other times, we’re swept into lo-fi pop reminiscent of the Beach Boys or the Beatles.

Look at how much they command during the NPR Tiny Desk concert — not just in sound but physical space, too. I close my eyes and picture the “Heart It Races” act swaying in black and white, but their performance is likely to be nothing less than colorful.

Opening the night is SWIMM, an indie duo with Florida origins, now transplanted into Los Angeles. Two EPs tout their track list, but each song pounds with detailed musicianship. It’s songs like “Belly” and “Feels” that demonstrate the versatility and beauty that shape the indie genre.

Grooving, elemental indie feels most natural in the hands of SWIMM, and it’s as if they’re controlling the air itself with each sweeping chord. I’ll be inhaling only the finest oxygen when the act arrives on stage.
