Forming up in 2005 out of Troy, Michigan, We Came As Romans (WCAR) has been through it all, from the highs of having major label success to the sudden loss of one of their members to accidental overdose, but they have come through this ever stronger, and putting out some of the more inspired music of their careers. I’ve really been digging their new album, DARKBLOOM, and the transition to a more mature sound, but I will always remember them as part of the long hair, V-Neck timeline were we were just out there enjoying our metalcore with the fun little electronic bits interspersed between all the heavy breakdowns.
Point in case: “An Ever-Growing Wonder” off their debut album, To Plant a Seed:
It’s been quite a few years since I’ve had the chance to revisit this band (early college for sure) and I can tell you that they definitely have not lost their edge when it comes to heavy. Dave Stephen’s voice has only smoothed out in the 13 years he’s been pulling the double duty of both the smooth and dirty lyrics. The dueling guitars crash and break, but in the way that it’s more iron and steel, over waves in the ocean. And don’t get me started on the more melodic parts of their songs! I always appreciated how they put just the right lightness and air to these parts, without losing the weight of their lyrics. This is also one of my favorite parts about this band. They were ones that always pushed a positive message in their music without coming off as preachy or overbearing.
Super digging this new reimagined version of the title track of their new album with the band Brand of Sacrifice:
But then there’s the stuff i know, like “I Will Not Reap Destruction,” off of their debut album, To Plant a Seed:
If you are needing a great way to bleed off the stress of the week and get that head a banging, it’s time to get yourself out to the House of Blues Orlando on January 28th! We Came As Romans should be a fantastic time, especially if the new album sounds as great as it does live as it does recorded. Make sure you get there early to check out ERRA and Brand of Sacrifice, especially after that reimagined song! Enter to win your tickets below, and then snag a couple for your friends as well!
