Twenty One Pilots Live Review

Holding on to the Cool Kids | Twenty One Pilots Live Review w/Echosmith | House of Blues Orlando October 8, 2015

by • October 28, 2015

My day started with sleeping in.

I did what I could do with office work before heading over to House of Blues early to take care other things. Kids (they’re kids in my eyes) were hanging out around the venue. Apparently about 8am, there were about 2,000 fans at the venue waiting. I am more than glad that I missed that chaos (I work at HOB). “Pass the Line” admission was already sold out. When I arrived, Twenty One Pilots was soundchecking. going on when I had arrived. That was cool to hear and partially see. Tyler sounded ready and Sydney from Echosmith sounded majestic. I was even more amped up for the show. 😀

Doors were at 6, so I was in the Loge by 6:30. There was a lot of waiting, and the floor was full. Everyone was claiming their spots. You could feel the excitement and anticipation in the venue boiling over. It was starting to get intense. Finish Ticket opened the show. We were all getting pumped up. I liked what I was hearing while going through their tracks and was curious to see them live. They took the stage, and I soon then became a fan. The guys got the crowd going, and they were getting a lot of love back. I think they were a great choice as the opener!

Echosmith opened with “Let’s Love.” One by one, each Sierota sibling took the stage. I was in love. I had never seen them live before, so I was really pining to see their set. I’m a huge fan of Sydney Sierota; she’s totally my romantic spirit animal. Then they played “Talking Dreams” and “Come Together.” I was being a little emo during “Tell Her You Lover Her.” -_- Sydney asked everyone to light up the room with their phones for first chords of “Bright.” All the lights were off, and the venue was glowing from all the phones. I got lost in the glow. The Sierota Clan slowed it down, gathered by Graham (drummer and youngest sibling of the four), and harmonized together during the song, which was both adorable and awesome at the same time. Sydney took a minute to thank everyone. She thanked all the fans for their support and gave them the same love and admiration right back. Mutual love and respect spilled across the room, just like everyone’s phone light had.

The band ended their set with “Up To You” and “Cool Kids.” At the end of “Up To You,” Sydney and Noah drummed the crap out of their own drumhead with blue LED drumsticks; it was so cool. The lighting was spot on. Sydney really had no reason to sing “Cool Kids.” The house would’ve taken care of the vocals. As the song came to an end, some fans were already racing out to wait in line to meet Echosmith by their merch table. The Sierota’s did not disappoint in any way. Their energy and talent blew me away. Sydney introduced her brothers, and they all received just as much love as she did. I know the next time Echosmith headlines, I will be there. I can only imagine what they do when they are the headliners.

At one point in the show, one of the production managers, had to come out and tell the crowd on the floor to take a few steps back because the people in the front were being crushed. It was getting crazy looking on the floor. It looked like a can of sardines, with plenty room in the back. The crowd was becoming a little restless during the set change between Echosmith and Twenty One Pilots. There were a few times when it seemed like Tyler and Josh were about to start. Total fake outs…or just the house music tracks changing. Tomato, potato.

Finally, the house lights went out. Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun took the stage. The guys opened with “Heavydirtysoul.” The lights were insane with the smoke and red backlight and big screens behind them. All the production add-ons definitely heightened the show and added theatrics, but the core of the show was the insurmountable energy Tyler and Josh brought. There’s so much to say about this show. My highlights were “Guns for Hands,” the “House of Gold” intro into Elvis’ “Can’t help Falling in Love,” and the piano and drum a medley of “The Pantaloon,” “Semi-Automatic,” “Forest,” and “Screen.”

Tyler went into the crowd for the beginning of “Holding on to You.” The fans held him up, and he was not phased by concern of being dropped or groped. “Ride” was next and is my favorite track from Blurryface, so I was rocking out to that. It seemed as though Tyler was singing back up for the crowd. Josh joined Tyler’s side at the piano with the drum beat to “The Run and Go.” After that song, they played “Car Radio.” “Car Radio” = Tyler running upstairs to the Loge and singing on the end of the banister dead center. It was fckin INSANE!!!! Once again, he showed confidence and not a worry in the world about losing balance.

The encore was AMAZING! I already knew what to expect song wise. Many of the fans were holding up signs during “Goner.” I never got on the bandwagon, so someone needs to educate me on that. Haha. They ended the encore with “Trees.” I was jumping up and down and head banging the whole song (I am now sore from that…can we say old?). Josh and Tyler had a drum “battle” on top of the crowd … and it was UNBELIEVEABLE!!! The entire venue was singing and dancing along. The confetti and smoke canons were RIDICULOUS! You would think you were at an arena show with all of the production. When Josh and Tyler took the stage one last time to look at the crowd, to take it all in, to bow, all I could was smile. I started tearing up. I felt like a proud parent. Seeing them back in 2013 at SXSW, and seeing them now … it has been a huge and an ever-changing transformation. At SXSW, it was just the two of them, absurd energy, and lights. Now, it’s still Josh Dun and Tyler Joseph, but with a huge production behind them. It makes the live experience even THAT more memorable! I can NOT wait to see them again!!
