My first Guster experience took place in 1999 at a radio festival in West Palm Beach that also featured bands like Kid Rock, Powerman 5000 and Kottonmouth Kings. Guster didn’t quite fit in at that show but they still played an awesome set, at one point thanking the crowd for moshing to their songs. By the end of their set they had won me over completely.
Guster have been around for a long-ass time. Since forming in Boston in 1991, the band has released seven studios albums and toured the globe countlessly. On Guster’s first three albums they used various different forms of hand percussion but have since switched to a traditional drum set on their newer albums. Although I have always felt that their unique percussion is something that set them apart from other bands, Guster has managed to mature into a style all their own. Their most recent album, Evermotion, which was released last month, is their first album of new material in five years. Guster will be bringing their tour in support of Evermotion to House of Blues Orlando on Saturday February 14, 2015 with opening act, Kishi Bashi (win tickets below).
Check out a live performance of the first single “Simple Machine” below.
Earlier this year, the mayor of Boston declared January 15, 2015, “Guster Day.” In celebration of “Guster Day”, the band played a series of busking shows at random places throughout the city. The location of each show was released shortly before each set on Twitter. On January 18, 2015, Guster held their first ever “Pot Jam” where the band picked one lucky fan to join them in Colorado where they would jam out and “try pot for the first time.”
Multi-Instrumentalist, Kishi Bashi will be joining Guster on their “Evermotion” tour. I just recently started listening to Kishi Bashi and I am psyched for his show (Mitch is a big fan, too – Read his Kishi Bashi Live Review here). This man can do some amazing things with a violin. He has worked with both Regina Spektor and of Montreal in the past. Make sure to arrive early to check out this one-of-a-kind show.
