If you missed The Pope on his Pope Does America Tour, don’t fret; a substitute pope will be blessing The Ritz Ybor this Sunday (WIN TICKETS BELOW). But this Pope is … a little different. In fact, he’s kind of the antithesis of Pope Frances: badass and satanic. Papa Emeritus III travels the world with five nameless ghouls as Ghost, a Swedish doom metal band with a particular affinity for pissing-off Catholics. Sorry Franny, the black robes and skull face paint are just cooler.

I wasn’t raised Catholic, but I’ve been to mass and it’s boring as hell. You stand. You sit. You kneel. You eat Jesus’ body and drink his blood (OK, that’s pretty wicked). You listen to hymns … Ghost’s live show tends to be a bit more brutal. Their hymns are overcome with chugging guitars and pounding drums that would have the godliest of men down on his knees. These instruments are commanded by the nameless ghouls, each whom represent one of the five elements: fire, water, wind, earth and ether. Papa Emeritus preaches over his praise team’s noise. His message: Satan is your buddy, accept him. 😈

Ghost released their latest full-length, Meliora, back in August, and now they’re sharing the good news with Florida. Because we at Shows I Go To love supporting the church, we’ve decided to give you the chance to worship with your metal brethren at black mass this Sunday. Peace be with you.
