Remember how good “MoneyGrabber” was?

Okay, it still is. It’s probably not right to get overly nostalgic about a tune that came out in 2010, but that was a jam. And don’t take this as any kind of a guaranteed-or-your-money-back kind of promise, but Fitz and The Tantrums will probably play it when they land in Orlando next month.

The band’s been around since 2008, when lead singer Michael Fitzpatrick bought an old Conn electronic organ and immediately wrote their first tune (“Breakin’ The Chains of Love”). A bunch of shows and a debut record led to a tour opening for Maroon 5, playing with Daryl Hall (from Hall & Oates) at his house and getting called out by Rolling Stone as a band to watch.

You get the sense that these guys are in this for the long haul. Maybe that only comes across once you see them live, when you’re able to properly feel what it is they want you to feel from their music, when you can see them working themselves into frenetic sweats. They sound old and new at the same time, tapping into a brand of soul that doesn’t make its way to the radio so much.

Some tickets to their show landed in my lap once. I took my mom with me. She was happy to sit far away in the balcony, playing on her phone and waving when I’d turn around. As for me, I stood right in front of the band. I got called out by Noelle Scaggs from the stage and told to dance even more than I already was. So I did as I was told. I wiggled some more. Maybe I fell in love with her a little bit in that instant as well? Yeah, maybe I did.
