Citizen captures the turbulence of your early twenties, the struggle through whatever shit situation it is at the time, mixed with the agony of being restless, and also an impetus for forward progress. It may be a coincidence that their studio album Youth and EP before that, Young States, are even titled as the undercover anthems of a generation. The vibe off Youth is part Basement Colourmeinkindness, and part Brand New The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me, thanks to riff-heavy guitars and confrontational lyrics like in “Your Head Got Misplaced”: “You’ve got a place to hide / Somewhere safe you found / So I locked you in.”
The band recently made news when a video from their show in San Diego at the House of Blues was posted online. At first glance, it looked like a tangle of security, but according to a recent Reddit AMA with the band, their story is that “a security guard at the venue punched a girl in the face, breaking her glasses,” and they stepped in to help diffuse the situation. The security guard in question was fired on the spot and the band says they are on good terms with the venue. Citizen inadvertently stands by their band name as being one of the people. From this situation they have their fans’ backs, and of course, their hearts and minds with their music.
Citizen latest single, “Silo”, is available on this tour only as a 7″ vinyl. It’s composition is grand, cinematic in balancing aggressive and quieter parts, and expands on their sound in a powerful way.
