Your favorite bands are going to his shows. His sound is harder to pin down than a chicken run amuck, finally free of the cage on a Sunday at dusk. He’s the wild card. Or maybe the Joker…

Astronautalis.

The name itself makes me relive the high school horror which was fifth period geometry, equations I would never solve. Stuffed with a preservative-filled lunch, I sat and scratched my head as Mrs. Showvaker hovered over me pointing out the simplicity of the Pythagorean Theorem, again. And now, here I sit in my living room, wrestling with my head yet again at the Jacksonville native’s sound and my sick, unrelenting need to try and pin it down.

It’s rap. It’s jazz. It’s big and small and swelling and simple and adjectives I don’t even know yet because, truly, I have never heard a sound like this. It’s clear that Charles Bothwell is not interested in boundaries and containing himself within any box. Storytelling is his bread and butter and he spreads it thick with tales which seem so out-of-this-world outlandish you have no choice but to take him at his ridiculously entertaining word.

This is one of those shows you go in possibly knowing nothing about the artist and leave jaw slacked, annoying your friends for two weeks telling them how they missed out on the siiiiiickest show ever.
