Get ready to vibe as we dive deep into the sounds of an eclectic group of individuals who have shared their love for music to the world for the past 25 years. Thievery Corporation is one of the most admirable music groups to date based on their long standing production as well as the fact that their genre is….well, it’s a bit of everything! We have partnered with No Clubs Presents for a chance for you to immerse yourself in diverse tunes next month, at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg on December 17th. Special guest Emancipator provides opening support. Enter the GIVEAWAY below or GET TICKETS HERE!
In 1996, two guys by the names of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton met in Washington DC and shared their love for club life as well as dub, bossa nova and jazz records. The city at the time was filled with inspiration and they felt as if they could truly be themselves as creatives without being surrounded by a huge musical hub influencing or pushing them to be something their not because of it being “trendy.” They admired their time in DC because it was vibrant and encouraging but allowed them the space to create their own unique sounds. That year, they released their first studio album Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi under their own record label Eighteenth Street Lounge Music.
The duo alongside twenty other musicians create what we see and hear during their recordings and live performances. In an interview with Garza by Spill Magazine, he states that the musicians that make up Thievery Corporation are of different ages, ethnicities and backgrounds and that the “diversity helps us bring the songs from the record to life on stage.”
The genres that make up the band can be categorized but not limited to: hip-hop, jazz, classical, Middle Eastern, electronica, dub, worldy, trip hop, lounge music, dance music, Indian classical, Brazilian music (such as bossa nova), reggae, and acid jazz. Garza and Hilton aim to make sounds that you can’t quite differentiate if the music is from now or a decade ago. Their music has always looked toward the future while playing homage to the past. As well as being powerfully talented musicians, the duo advocates for inclusivity. “Social consciousness is more mainstream, awareness of the importance of inclusivity… it’s so encouraging to see working toward these goals in America,” states Hilton in a quote from their website. They promote this concept, from their openness to worldly genres — to the musicians who create what makes up Thievery Corporation to this day.
With over twenty-five years of playing, ten studio albums, a couple world tours, and a whole lot of love for culture and music, this band is one you absolutely do not want to miss live. “We have a sitar player, songs are in different languages – it’s a multicultural experience, people connect to the band and to each other, it’s beautiful,” Garza raves while expressing that Thievery Corporation’s live shows are “VERY live with lots of energy.”
Enter the GIVEAWAY below for a chance to dance and connect through Thievery Corporation at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg on December 17th. They will also be playing a Shows I Go To marketed show in Ft. Lauderdale at Revolution Live the night after, December 18th.
