Hey you! Have you ever heard of a band called The Maine?! If not, they might become one of your new favorite bands after you check them out at the House of Blues Orlando, Wednesday March 23rd (TICKETS HERE). They’re bringing The Happy Fits and Charlotte Sands, and you need to go check them out if you like what you hear below!
The only time I’ve ever had the privilege chance to catch The Maine was ironically the day after I received a concussion at another show the night before. They were opening for Anberlin, right after Forever Halloween had been released, and I wasn’t going to let a silly thing like head trauma stop me from hearing songs from one of my favorite albums! That night, they stole the show out from underneath Anberlin, and cemented themselves as one of my go—to live alternative bands. Unfortunately, I then missed them for 9 years. Luckily, I’ll finally right that wrong next month up here in Seattle!
The Maine’s selling point is that they’ve come extremely far from what they were, yet still hold on to their pop punk/alternative roots. If you listen to their early albums, you notice that they incorporate what I’ve always thought of as a western twang that you just didn’t hear in pop punk. Maybe it’s singer John O’Callaghan’s gravely smooth voice, or the guitar harmonies between Jared Monaco and Kennedy Brock. Whatever it was, it was something new and different that I had never heard before. Take a listen to this track off their second album Black & White, “Right Girl:”
But here’s a couple of my favorite songs by them, starting with my absolute #1, “Love & Drugs” off of Forever Halloween:
And here’s their cover of Death Cab For Cutie’s “Transatlanticism” off the compilation album Songs that Saved My Life:
Finally, I have to add one more cover, just because the original is one of my favorite songs to come out in the past little while, and this cover is just as fun!
So get yourselves over to the House of Blues March 23rd and check out one of the coolest alt bands that have been floating around for over 10 years! They always bring an amazing show, no two songs sound the same, and pretty soon, you’ll find yourself a part of the 8123 family too!
