There was already a line of fans sitting on the curb in the hot afternoon Florida sun, waiting to get into Park Ave CD’s to hear The Maine’s acoustic set when I arrived. The store was packed when everyone was let it in. It became a fun nightmare getting from one end of the store to the other. John and Jared came out and sang some songs from their American Candy Album with all eyes were fixated on them.
The guys of The Maine are millennials, like me, and I feel like most millennials have lost an appreciation for tangible assets. More specifically, tangible music, like a vinyl record or a cd. I’m just as guilty as the next person for downloading music off the internet because it’s quick and easy, but there’s something about walking into a shop that sells cd’s and vinyl records. And The Maine gets it too. John even took a minute to talk about his love for local music and record stores, like Park Ave CD’s.
“Someone was trying to tell me CDs are better than vinyl because they don’t have any surface noise. I said, ‘Listen mate, life has surface noise.’ “ – John Peel
Later that night, The Maine took the stage to an even greater packed house at The Beacham and delivered one hell of a show. The lights were blue, setting a cool tone as they came out playing “Miles Away,” one of my favorite songs.
Right after, John slowed it down with an acoustic version of “Into Your Arms” the rest of the band joined him onstage to do the unthinkable. Cover a Rolling Stones song. As they laid into “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” there was no looking back. For four minutes, they owned that song and sent some kids home looking up a song they’ve never heard before.
What better way to cap off the night than with “Right Girl?” They even got the right girl from the crowd up on stage to perform the song with them. That girl killed it, was so much fun to watch, and was the perfect ending to a day filled with The Maine.
