The Get Up Kids were one of my favorite bands growing up; when every other kid in my school was singing along with whatever was popular on the school bus, there I was with my portable Sony CD player, jamming out to bands like Jimmy Eat World (Clarity era), Mineral, Sunny Day Real Estate, and The Get Up Kids. I wasn’t old enough to really get the lyrics at the time, but I always really enjoyed what the music sounded like.

It was the beauty of growing up in Seattle, because there were so many alternative and college rock channels, I really got exposed to many different styles as a kid. As I got older, I kind of gave into peer pressure, and started listening to a lot of pop and mainstream rock, which I don’t hate, because it allowed me to broaden my horizons, but unfortunately, I almost forgot about my old friends, The Get Up Kids, who are coming to Orlando at House Of Blues on August 9 (win tickets below)!

I recently got back into old school emo again, mostly because of the emo/screamo revival movement that is starting to make an impact on the scene, and along with it, I’ve been able to relisten to and re-appreciate all these bands that I used to love. The Get Up Kids definitely hold a special place in my heart, be it “Washington Square Park” off of Four Minute Mile or everyone’s favorite, “I’m a Loner Dottie, A Rebel,” from the quintessential Something to Write Home About.

These guys were super influential in my life, and the fact that they are touring with Braid, another favorite, and early runner in the emo wave, makes this show extremely exciting to me.  If you are looking to come listen to some of the best music out there, and see some bands that influenced both this writer and pretty much every punk, rock, and emo band in the early to mid 2000s, come join me on August 9th at the House of Blues in Orlando! It will be a show you will regret not going to!
