Like Mavis Staples, Otis Redding, or Aretha Franklin, Paul Janeway’s musical Odyssey began in the church. The son of a preacher, St. Paul was groomed for the pulpit. An introduction to the guitar led Paul to a pedestal of a different stripe — the stages and amplifiers of America’s great rock clubs.
St. Paul and the Broken Bones released their debut album in 2014. Produced by Ben Howard (keyboardist for Alabama Shakes) and featuring Browan Lollar (formerly of Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, and also the son of an Alabama preacher) on guitar, and mixed at legendary FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, Half the City is an album that nods to the aforementioned heavyweights while forging new ground in Southern Soul.
St. Paul and the Broken Bones is an Alabama band to the marrow. The state’s special amalgamation of gospel, soul, folk, blues, rock, and country comes out in the sensational creations of its endless supply of incredible musicians. St. Paul and the Broken Bones exemplify the best of the Alabama tradition — soul music played like it was shot out of a NASA rocket in Huntsville.
As Mavis Staples herself once said regarding the common thread between folk and soul, “We both sing about beauty and love.” St. Paul and the Broken Bones sing about beauty and love with a zeal that few bands on the planet can match. Mavis, Otis, and Aretha are names that should not be thrown around lightly. But when the likes of famously critical Keith Richards gives his endorsement, you know something special is happening.
