Smashing Pumpkins and Marilyn Manson is really a mighty wave of 90’s nostalgia. The alt-rock giants seize Tampa Bay at the MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre at the Florida State Fairgrounds for their “The End Times Tour,” on July 24, 2015–and you won’t want to miss it (win tickets below).
Taking the stage in one of the area’s biggest venues, the party will be anything but Mellon Collie- feeling, though I’m really hoping my favorites off the 1995 release will seize the 70-80 minute set. The album unleashed numerous Top 40 hits, and it’s impossible to enter a bar today without belting out “1979.” Or maybe we’ll all share a Siamese Dream.
Though the Pumpkins are big names now, it wasn’t that long ago that they were among the pioneers of the indie-alt scene. That’s right, we had them first, hipsters!
The tour also ushers a special reunion with original drummer Jimmy Chamberlain, who has been off the lineup since 2009. The drummer’s return has been perfect timing and signals a guarantee top-notch performance of hit “Bullet with Butterfly Wings.” After all, no one can drum like Chamberlain.
Manson, on the other hand, has a unique history in Tampa Bay.
He’s scared the piss out of St. Petersburgers‘ clutching their pearls in the 1996 at Jannus Landing–the police were patrolled outside of the venue in case of obscenity, and Rolling Stone falsely reported his arrest for indecent exposure. What a ride.
Oh Marilyn, we’re so glad you gave us another shot in 2009, and are destined for another Tampa Bay return. He’s known to be the purveyor of shock-rock and will always out-do the Mileys and Kanyes of today. Except in a more spine-chilling way. (Does anyone else remember the rumors that he had ribs removed?)
The Prince of Creepy will likely belt out spitting hits like “The Beautiful People” and “This Is the New Shit,” but don’t be surprised if he blasts through singles from his latest release, The Pale Emperor. Seems like an apt title for the ever-glammy, spooky act. I’m more partial to his techno-y, horror riveted rendition of “Tainted Love,” but that might be my ’80s addiction coming out.
I’m a little curious to see who opens for who–will it be Manson getting us riled up and the Pumpkins simmering the night with mellow vibes? Or better yet, will we be in a pleasant, indie high, and then jolted into the rocking, addictive nightmare that is Manson?
