Want a fresh perspective on the week in Hip Hop news? Some insight into the new Joe Budden/Drake Beef, or how Desiigner made a hated freestyle into a popular song? Here’s our take on some of the biggest stories of the past seven days.
JOE BUDDEN HANGS DRAKE OUT TO DRY ON “MAKING A MURDERER (PT.1)”
It was bound to happen…again. It appears that even while being at the top of the rap game, Drake is still an easy target. As demonstrated by Joe Budden, who basically dismantles the 6 God on this new scorcher., and even has a little left over for Meek Mill. Have a listen.
ICE CUBE TO GET A STAR ON THE HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME
A little ironic that a man who once sung “Burn Hollywood Burn” is now being given a star on the Walk of Fame. If Ice Cube hadn’t already morphed into Nice Cube, this honor has officially done it. Guess we can’t be mad after such an amazing year with Straight Outta Compton and another successful Barbershop movie.
DESIIGNER XXL FREESTYLE MADE INTO A SONG
It’s the “freestyle” everyone is up in arms over. And Brooklyn rapper Desiigner has officially made it into a song with veteran producer Mike Dean. No matter how you feel about the new emcee, his brand of rhyming and singing or his success, he’s proving that he knows how to capitalize on the moment.
SEASON 3 OF SISTERHOOD OF HIP HOP TO PREMIERE ON JULY 12
Considered by many the complete opposite of the Love and Hip Hop franchise, Sisterhood of Hip Hop has now reached its third season. In the trailer below, we see the artists facing a new set of situations, from escalating beefs to trouble with the law. Sisterhood of Hip Hop premiers on Oxygen on July 12.
LENA DUNHAM, PIERS MORGAN CALL KANYE WEST OUT FOR HIS “FAMOUS” VIDEO
Dunham, a best-selling author and creator and star of the hit HBO show Girls called West’s video “one of the more disturbing ‘artistic’ efforts in recent memory” as well as emblematic of “rape culture.” Morgan, a former CNN host referred to it as “click-baiting and crude, cynical marketing.” It would seem that Mr. West’s experiment successfully served its purpose.
VIC MENSA’S “FREE LOVE” GOES AFTER HOMOPHOBIA IN HIP HOP
On the new track featuring Le1f, Halsey, Lil B, and Malik Yusef, Vic Mensa takes aim at folks who have a problem with marriage equality and the LGBTQ community at large. Maybe a newer generation of Hip Hop artists will bring others around to a greater sense of tolerance. We can only hope.
