In another exciting week of Hip Hop news, we had it all: tons of new music, legends honoring other legends, new album release dates, and of course all kinds of controversy. Check out some of the stories that the past seven days of Hip Hop news had to offer.
NEW FETTY WAP VIDEO STIRS CONTROVERSY
Fetty’s video for his new song “Wake Up” was recorded at East Side High School, his alma mater in Paterson, N.J. But the song contains references to drugs and also features a pole dance. Due to the nature of the video, Paterson Superintendent Donnie Evans announced Wednesday that East Side High School principal Zatiti Moody has been suspended. Not the greatest way to get promo for your new music, Fetty.
QUESTLOVE: 40 REASONS WHY PRINCE WAS HIP HOP
Questlove is quite possibly one of the greatest Instagramers ever. And after a special tribute cover by The Source magazine featuring the late Prince, he gave 40 reasons why Prince was truly Hip Hop. Including Prince coming from a broken home, having beef with peers who hated on him, and releasing music on the Internet quickly. We can probably add to the list that he was a master of shade throwing. R.I.P. Prince.
NEW MUSIC: PUSHA T FEAT. JAY Z, “DRUG DEALERS ANONYMOUS”
The new track, “Drug Dealers Anonymous“, is now available on Tidal and features an aggressive Jay Z and a dark and ominous Pusha T, both being reflective but not shying away from their pasts as street pharmacists. More proof that we could be getting Pusha’s new King Push album sooner than later.
ZULU NATION OFFERS APOLOGIES TO ACC– USERS OF AFRIKA BAMBAATAA
In a letter released Tuesday, the Universal Zulu Nation changed its stance and offered a formal apology to the accusers of Nation co-founder Afrika Bambaataa. The letter also apologizes specifically to allegers Ronald “Bee-Sting” Savage and Hassan “Poppy” Campbell and ends with more than 30 leaders in the organization signing off. Both the Nation and Bambaataa both continue to deny the charges. But the sentiment may be too little, too late, at least in the court of public opinion.
SCHOOLBOY Q RELEASES NEW VIDEO, ANNOUNCES ALBUM RELEASE DATE
The Black Hippy/TDE member said on Twitter that his as yet untitled album is set for release on July 8 via Twitter. He also released a new video, “That Part”, featuring none other than Kanye West. Have a look at the new visuals below.
HIP HOP CONCERTS CANCELLED IN WAKE OF T.I./TROY AVE SHOOTING
Live Hip Hop shows in New York featuring artists like Joey Bada$$ and Mac Miller have been cancelled by LiveNation. The cancelations come in the wake of the Irving Plaza shooting at a T.I. concert on May 25. Sadly, it looks like Hip Hop is once again being blamed for the ignorance of a handful of morons with firearms. A shitty but not unfamiliar story to say the least.
