by • May 27, 2016

This week’s Hip Hop new cycle had more stories than an 8th grader trying to explain a report card full of D’s and F’s. Here’s a small sampling of some of the most talked about headlines from the last week in May. Hold on tight, folks: the summer Hip Hop season has arrived!

T.I. CONCERT SHOOTING IN NEW YORK

A sad, troubling situation outside of a T.I. concert has led to a lot of drama. Apparently an altercation between rival camps may have led to the shooting. Additionally, New York rapper Troy Ave was shot in the leg and has been charged with attempted murder. One of his affiliates, Banga, was killed in the melee. And NYPD commissioner Bill Bratton has blamed Hip Hop music and culture in general for the ugliness. There are sure to be more developments from this story across the Internet, so stay tuned.

JAY Z APPEARS ON “ALL THE WAY UP” REMIX, MAY BE WORKING WITH FAT JOE

Fat Joe and Remy Ma’s “All The Way Up” is officially one of the songs of the summer having gotten a major bump in interest this week with the release of the remix featuring Hova himself. Now there are reports that Jay may be collaborating with Fat Joe. What’s in store for such a combination? Only time will tell.

DRAKES’ VIEWS HAS BEEN STREAMED OVER 500 MILLION TIMES

Drizzy originally made Views an exclusive on Apple Music. But since its expansion to streaming services like Spotify and Tidal, the songs on Drake’s fourth album have been streamed a total of 572 million times. Additionally, the album regained the top spot from Beyonce’s Lemonade and helped him regain the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Let’s face it, folks: Mr. Graham is sitting comfortably at the top of Hip Hop’s heap with no signs of slowing down.

DIDDY CONFIRMS WHO BIGGIE’S “I GOT A STORY TO TELL” WAS ABOUT

It’s been one of Hip Hop’s most controversial urban legends since 1997. Earlier, Bronx rapper Fat Joe came close to confirming that the NBA player on the song “I Got A Story To Tell” from Biggie’s second album, Life After Death, was none other than former New York Knicks player Anthony Mason. And in an interview with The Breakfast Club, mogul P. Diddy my have inadvertently confirmed it. Check out the interview below and let us know what you think.

THE ROOTS RELEASE THE OFFICIAL NBA FINALS THEME SONG

At this point, there’s really nothing that The Roots can’t do. They are the house band for Jimmy Fallon and have their own annual picnic/music festival in the city of Philadelphia. And now, they have made headway in the sports world by penning the official theme for the NBA Finals, “Champion”. You can listen to the song below.

VH1 TO REVIVE HIP HOP HONORS AWARDS SHOW

The show has been on a six-year hiatus. But according to a press release by VH1, the popular awards show will return on July 11 and will “pay homage to the female pioneers, trailblazers, and trend-setters who lead a movement and infiltrated the ranks of the male-dominated genre to make their voices heard and still do today.” Honorees are yet to be named.
