SIGT HIP HOP STOP W/ RON GRANT | Drake Pulls A Kanye, Slick Rick Celebrates His U.S. Citizenship, Iggy Azaelia Comes For Beyonce, D’Angelo Honors Prince, Birdman Capitalizes, KRS One Comments On Afrika Bambaataa Allegations

by • April 29, 2016

Apologies for not posting last week, but we’re back at it giving you a week in review of the biggest Hip Hop news. This week saw major music releases, major drama and major tributes by the Hip Hop community for the late, great Prince. Here are some of those stories.

DRAKE CHANGES ALBUM TITLE TO VIEWS

You must admit, this was one helluva week for our man Drake. Not only did he announce the dates for the “Summer Sixteen” Tour with Future and the seventh annual OVOFest, he also dropped his new album yesterday. Formerly titled Views From The 6, it premiered as Views on Apple Music. With each passing month, Canada’s current favorite son is looking more and more unstoppable.

SLICK RICK TO GO ON TOUR AFTER OBTAINING CITIZENSHIP

A native Brit, Slick Rick finally gained U.S. Citizenship last week after a 20-year battle and threats of deportation. To celebrate, the man that gave us Hip Hop gems like “Children’s Story” and “Hey Young World” is now going on an 18-city tour. Check out the current list of cities he’ll be visiting.

IGGY AZALEA CALLS OUT BEYONCE FOR “BECKY” LYRIC

Turns out both women in the Hip Hop world with “Azaelia” in their name are none too pleased with Beyonce, her new album or the song “Sorry”. Iggy Azaelia believes Bey using the name ‘Becky’ is offensive to white women everywhere, when she asserts that she was cheated on with “Becky with the good hair“. She even got into a Twitter spat with some of Bey’s fans. Can’t say we’re surprised at this one.

D’ANGELO COVERS PRINCE ON THE TONIGHT SHOW

It’s been over a week since the world lost one of the greatest songwriters, performers and artists of all time in Prince. An artist that has influenced all kinds of artists, including throughout Hip Hop. On The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, D’Angelo covered the Purple One’s “Sometimes It Snows In April” in tribute. It’s a touching, heartfelt musical moment, without a doubt.

BIRDMAN SELLS “PUT SOME RESPECK ON MY NAME” T-SHIRTS

Ever since the Breakfast Club “interview” video with Birdman hit the Internet last week, it’s been something that has taken on a life of its own with all kinds of memes, jokes and more. But looks like Birdman might have the last laugh as he’s now selling T-shirts with what is now his most famous line, “Respeck on my name“. Get the full story here.

KRS ONE CALLS AFRIKA BAMBAATAA MOLESTATION ALLEGATIONS A PERSONAL MATTER

Some disturbing allegations against Hip Hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa were leveled recently. But one person that is looking to keep these allegations separate from what Bambaataa has done for Hip Hop is the Blastmaster KRS One. In an interview on N.O.R.E.’s podcast, the Teacher expressed that he had little concern for the charges against the leader of the Soulsonic Force. Here’s part of the conversation.
