Hip Hop news came hot, heavy, and fast and furious this week. We had major names announcing new albums and new live shows, top lyricists dropping full-length projects, and even a Twitter beef we’ve been waiting years to see. Below is a snapshot of this past weeks’ most important stories.
DRAKE ANNOUNCES VIEWS FROM THE 6 RELEASE DATE
April 29 can’t come soon enough for fans of Aubrey Drake Graham. That’s when he has announced he’ll drop his latest album, Views From The 6. And the album is reportedly going to be an Apple Music/iTunes exclusive on the day of release. Safe to say that this is so far the biggest Hip Hop release of the year? Pretty much.
SECOND SHOW ADDED FOR BAD BOY REUNION AT BARCLAY’S CENTER
Good things come in pairs. Or so it would seem to Puff Daddy. and the Bad Boy Crew. Announced via social media on Sunday, a second show has been added to the previously ‘one night only’ affair to celebrate the birthday of the Notorious B.I.G. The shows are happening May 20th and 21st. New Yorkers are so damn lucky.
KENDRICK LAMAR SUED OVER BILL WITHERS SAMPLE
The complaint from Bill Withers’ publishing company says that Lamar’s song “I Do This” from his 2013 self-titled EP is too similar in sound to Withers’ song “Don’t Want You To Stay”. It’s not the first time the Compton emcee and Top Dawg Entertainment have been in hot water for un-cleared samples. We’ll see how this one shakes out.
FAITH EVANS TO HAVE BIGGIE HOLOGRAM IN NEW VIDEO
First we had Tupac and Michael Jackson. Now Biggie Smalls is becoming a hologram. Biggie’s former wife, Faith Evans, has a new duets album and will release a video featuring a hologram of the one and only Notorious B.I.G. Seems you can’t keep music artists deceased for long these days.
HOT 97 ANNOUNCES SUMMER JAM 2016 LINEUP
The biggest Hip Hop concert of the year just announced its lineup this week by New York’s Hot 97. Artists scheduled to appear include Big Sean, A$AP Rocky, Tinashe and more to be announced soon. The show happens in NYC on June 5 and tickets are already on sale.
AZEALIA BANKS AND WALE HAVE A TWITTER BEEF
This was a Twitter war that was years in the making! Neither emcee is a stranger to social media beef, with Wale getting into it on Instagram and Twitter with Meek Mill and Banks pretty much trolling every celebrity in the free world. It’s actually a little surprising that this didn’t happen sooner.
