The holiday season is well underway. And with Christmas just a few weeks away, the gift of Hip Hop News just keeps on giving. This week there’s been the endings and beginnings of jail sentences, shade of all kinds, and even some more new music. Here’s a list of some headline-grabbing stories from the past seven days.
BOND REQUEST FOR BOBBY SHMURDA DENIED
Shmurda was an Internet sensation in 2014 with a hit single and even his own dance that took the world by storm. Sadly, it all came crashing down just as he was getting hot due to his arrest for weapons and drug charges. It has been reported that his family raised $2 million in collateral to bail him out. But his bond request was denied on December 3. Looks like Bobby will still be Shmoney dancing in prison a little while longer, until his next hearing in January. Additional reporting below from Complex News.
“LOVE AND HIP HOP” STAR SENTENCED TO PRISON
Needless to say, it’s been a bad week for Hip Hop and prison. Reality TV star Mendeecees Harris can attest to this. The VH1 Love And Hip Hop personality has been sentenced to eight years on drug trafficking charges. In an Instagram photo post, Harris took full responsibility for his role in the actions committed. Hopefully this serves as a cautionary tale to anyone presently being seduced by the street life. A link to the Instagram message can be found by clicking the photo below.
NEW J. COLE DOCUMENTARY TO AIR ON HBO
Cole has been on an almost unstoppable run with his last few albums. 2014 Forest Hills Drive was considered to be one of 2014’s best Hip Hop albums. Now, he’s taking his candor and soulfulness to television with a part-documentary, part-life story, and part-concert film. J. Cole’s Forest Hills Drive: Homecoming will air January 9 at 10 p.m. on HBO.
IGGY AZALEA ADDRESSES ERYKAH BADU SHADE
So, when someone throws a little shade your way on national TV as part of an award show, it’s best to ignore it and keep it moving. Right? Not for Iggy. Erykah Badu mocked her on the Soul Train Awards this past Sunday. But of course, Iggy couldn’t possibly let it slide. She took to Twitter this week to clap back (sort of) at her haters. Check out what she said at this link.
GHOSTFACE KILLAH/ACTION BRONSON BEEF INSPIRES A VIDEO GAME
When was the last time you knew a Hip Hop beef to have the potential to create something so fun? It seems the rift between Tony Starks and Bronsolini has inspired a Super Mario Bros. style video game by web developers Swamp Penguins. Fans can play a demo at tinyurl.com/ghostvsbron.
THIRD CEO THIS YEAR FOR JAY Z’S TIDAL
We can’t say it’s been an easy liftoff for Jay Z’s Tidal Streaming Service. But the latest man hired as CEO could help change all that. He is former Soundcloud chief business officer, Jeff Toig, and has a ton of music industry and streaming service experience under his belt. With Toig being the third CEO in eight months, you can bet that Jay Z and his partners hope that he will be sticking around to help right the wrongs that have held Tidal back as a reputable entertainment service.
