It was a busy and intriguing week in Hip Hop once again. Below, we cover come of the biggest stories that took shape during the past seven days that you might have missed. More music, more drama, more live show announcements, more everything!
THE ROOTS HOLIDAY TOUR 2015
Looks like Christmas has come a few months early for East coast fans of the legendary Roots crew! Hip Hop’s favorite band announced on Okayplayer.com that they will be hitting the road for their 2015 Holiday Tour. Stops will be in New York, New Jersey, Maryland and Massachusetts, ending with a January 2 show to ring in the new year at Boston’s Hard Rock Cafe. Ticket pre sales are underway right now!
HOPSIN TAKES AIM AT NEW RAPPERS IN “NO WORDS” VIDEO
There’s a lot of talk about how the art of Hip Hop continues to take a back seat to convenience and trends. And Hopsin minces no words (pun intended) on this skit-turned-video entitled, you guessed it, “No Words.” Judging from the visuals, we can decipher that Hopsin might very well be specifically calling out artists like Future, Trinidad Jame$ and Young Thug. Or, it could just be his displeasure with current day Hip Hop all together. Judge for yourself: check out the video below.
RAURY FEAT. BIG K.R.I.T. – “FORBIDDEN KNOWLEDGE”
Raury is turning into one of the new school’s most promising and original voices. On his new song “Forbidden Knowledge”, he enlists the help of Cadillactica emcee Big K.R.I.T. as they both drop some seriously powerful, thought-provoking bars over a soulful, old school beat. Here’s the song for your listening pleasure.
NICKI MINAJ SHUTS DOWN A NEW YORK TIMES INTERVIEWER
Ms. Nicki can’t seem to stay out of the spotlight. After her infamous calling out of Miley Cyrus at the VMA Awards, Minaj recently took issue with some questions asked by writer Vanessa Grigoriadis for a New York Times piece. All was going well until Nicki was asked why she feeds off of Hip Hop drama. Her response? “To put down a woman for something that men do, as if they’re children and I’m responsible, has nothing to do with you asking stupid questions… That’s a premeditated thing you just did. Do not speak to me like I’m stupid or beneath you… I don’t care to speak to you anymore.” BURN!
KENDRICK LAMAR PAYS HOMAGE TO EAZY-E
Tributes to Hip Hop pioneers seem to be all the rage in 2015. The latest comes from Compton emcee Kendrick Lamar and a tribute to fellow Cali artist, the late Eazy-E. On the heals of both his tribute to Tupac Shakur and the Straight Outta Compton film’s success, Lamar was pegged to celebrate Eazy for Paper Magazine’s three-part “Nowstalgia” series on late Hip Hop legends. Additional tributes from Paper from Eminem praising Tupac and Swizz Beatz remembering Notorious B.I.G.
