I will never forget the first time I saw Save Ferris perform live. They were one of the few bands I didn’t recognize on the lineup of a local radio show back in 1997 that featured Green Day, Less Than Jake, Goldfinger and more. I had heard Save Ferris’s ska cover of the Dexys Midnight Runners’ classic “Come On, Eileen” on the radio about a week before the show and I immediately rushed out to buy the album. I listened to that album nonstop and by the day of the show, I knew every word to every song. This was relatively early in my show-going career so this might have even been my first ska show ever. For years I have looked back on that day as one of the most fun days of music ever. I can’t even bring myself to throw away the shirt I got that day even though it is very old and faded now.
A few months ago I was surprised to come across a post for a ska festival in Mexico that advertised Save Ferris. I checked to see if it was legit and sure enough, Save Ferris was back and in the process of working on a new EP called Checkered Past. The EP will be released on Friday, February 10 and will be followed by a full tour in support of the record (See dates below).

Recently, I had the opportunity to check out Checkered Past. Within seconds of putting it on, I was transported back to the mid-nineties at the peak of the 3rd wave ska revival. It was very refreshing to finally hear the luscious vocals of Monique Powell again after nearly twenty years. I’d been looking forward to this release since I first heard of the band’s Pledge Music campaign to record this new EP and it was definitely worth the wait. This five-song EP has a little something for everyone, from the fast-paced ska heavy opener “Anything” to the rocksteady, dancehall beats of “New Sound” (See video below). I highly recommend this album to old school Save Ferris fans or even fans of ska in general.
