Interview with Paulina “Pau” Villarreal, drums+vocals for The Warning (Mexico)

Mitch Foster, SIGT: Your new EP, Mayday, is produced by David Bendez, who did Paramore’s Riot, and Bring Me The Horizon, A Day To Remember, etc. How was recording with David?
TW: Recording with David was awesome. It was actually pretty nerve-wracking because we had never worked with David before, but we met each other through Zoom and we vibed; it was good! Meeting him in-person for the first time was pretty scary, but David is a sweetheart and he’s such an organized and creative person, so it was a really good experience. I feel like it was an experience where we all grew so much as musicians, and it really reflects on this new upcoming material. It was also our first time working with a producer who speaks English, so that was pretty weird, but fun!
SIGT: You sing while playing the drums?
TW: Definitely. I started playing the drums when I was around 6 years old. I started playing because my parents bought us the video game Rock Band, and I would play it all the time, specifically the drums. My dad then saw I had really good coordination, and he said “Hey, do you wanna try doing this, playing the drums, for real?” I was super hyped for it and I said, “Of course!” So I started lessons and immediately fell in love with it. I vividly remember one of the first things my drum teacher taught me was how to sing while playing. It was for coordination so I could learn not only how to separate my limbs and do something different with each one of them, but also have my body really concentrated on doing something that is very physically demanding. I started doing this when I was very young, just for the sake of coordination. Whenever I learned a cover song, I would always sing it while playing because it was something that came really naturally. When we started doing our own music, I started writing some of the songs on the piano, and I was very inclined to sing, and I really wanted to do it! But it’s only when we started playing live that I began training myself and my body to endure that type of cardio, and still be able to breathe correctly for singing. It has taken a lot of practice, but it’s such a fun thing to do— to be able to play and sing live.
SIGT: You and your sisters are the sole members of The Warning; what’s it like working with your family all the time?
TW: It’s pretty interesting. I feel like more than anything, we have more pros than cons. We started this band when we were really young, when we were kids. We got a big boom because of the “Enter Sandman” cover we did 7 years ago (2014), so we started our careers and we were launched into the spotlight for a short while. We were really young, so we experienced a lot of things that maybe kids our age weren’t able to do, but sometimes that made us feel a little bit isolated. I feel like a lot of musicians go through that same feeling, but I had my family with me all the time, and we all went through the same thing, so I feel like our connection is really strong because of everything that we have been through together. Writing music, touring, and just everything is a lot more comfortable and a little more doable [with family], because we know each other so well and we get along really well, so it makes things so much easier.
SIGT: Is there a message would you like to leave behind for girls who are looking to break into the music scene?
TW: Most definitely, don’t give up. It is sometimes very tempting to give up when you are starting out; it’s a lot of hard work and a lot of practice. You have to be very disciplined to be able to do it, and have a goal in mind, and never lose sight of that goal and constantly work hard. Surround yourself with people who care— who you think you are able to work with correctly and communicate with— because I feel like that makes the biggest difference when working in music in general. More than anything, don’t give up, it can be a bit hard but perseverance is the key!

SIGT: Congratulations on becoming a part of The Metallica Blacklist album. It’s so cool you launched your band with a Metallica cover of “Enter Sandman” and now you are on an Official Metallica release.
TW: Thank you! It was such a full circle moment and an insane experience. Not only doing it as The Warning but alongside Alessia Cara was an amazing experience overall. To be at the same festival, performing on the same day is insane. This is going to be actually our first show since everything re-started. We had this gig before The Blacklist album, so now that we’ve participated in their album, hopefully we get to meet them, or at least say hi for a quick second. We are definitely very hyped for it. Fun fact: we have never seen them live!
SIGT: Are there any other artists you are looking forward to seeing live at Rockville?
TW: Grandson! I’m a big fan, so I’m excited to see them there.
SIGT: Is there anything you’d like to say to the fans at Rockville
TW: First of all, thank you for coming! It is such a great feeling to be able to come back to these shows and see people are still looking forward to rock music, especially live. It’s very encouraging to keep doing what we do when you see such a big turnout and excitement for it. So, more than anything, thank you so much, and we hope that you like our group, and I hope to see you more often!
SIGT: Would you like to say anything to them in Spanish?
TW: ¡In Spanish! Muchísimas gracias, estamos muy muy emocionadas de poder estar tocando en este festival. Es uno de nuestros primeros festivales que tocamos en Estados Unidos. Más que nada muchas gracias por todo el apoyo, y por estar aquí. También estar apoyando la música en vivo, algo que hacía tanta falta entonces gracias y nos da mucha emoción de estar participando aquí con ustedes.

Mitch Foster, SIGT: Tu nuevo EP, Mayday, es producido por David Bendez, que también produjo éxitos como Paramore’s Riot y Bring Me The Horizon, A Day To Remember, etc. ¿Cómo es grabar con David?
TW: Grabar con David es asombroso. Estábamos realmente muertas de nervios porque nunca habíamos trabajado con David, pero nos conocimos a través de Zoom y nos conectamos muy rápido, fue muy bueno. Conocerlo en persona por primera vez fue un poco intimidante, pero David es un amor, una persona muy profesional, organizada y creativa así que la experiencia fue muy positiva. Siento que es fue una oportunidad en la que crecimos mucho como músicos y se ve reflejado en nuestro nuevo material. También fue la primera vez trabajando con un productor que solo habla inglés así que fue un poco raro pero divertido.
SIGT: ¿Cantas mientras tocas la batería?
TW: Definitivamente. Empecé a tocar la batería cuando tenía 6 años. Comencé cuando mis padres nos compraron un videojuego llamado Rock Band, lo jugaba todo el día ¡especialmente la batería! Cuando mi papá vio que tenía buena coordinación me pregunto “¿No te gustaría tocar la batería de verdad?” yo estaba muy emocionada y conteste que sí! Así que empecé a tomar lecciones e inmediatamente me enamoré. Recuerdo muy bien que una de las primeras cosas que aprendí de mi profesor fue a cantar mientras tocas el instrumento. Al principio solo fue por coordinación para aprender no solo a trabajar distintas partes del cuerpo en simultáneo sino también para entrenar a mi cuerpo a concentrarse en algo físicamente demandante. Empecé a hacer esto por pura coordinación, y cuando hacíamos cover de alguna canción, siempre la cantaba porque era algo que me venía muy natural. Y ahora que hacemos nuestra propia música, muchas de las canciones las escribí en el piano así que me incliné muchísimo por cantarlas. Aun así, no fue hasta que empezamos a tocar en vivo que empecé a entrenar mi cuerpo a soportar este tipo de cardio y poder aprender a respirar correctamente para el canto. Es mucho trabajo duro, pero es divertido poder cantar y tocar.
SIGT: Tus hermanas y tú son las únicas integrantes de The Warning, ¿Cómo es trabajar con tu familia todo el tiempo?
TW: Es bastante interesante. Siento que mas que nada tenemos mas pros que contras. Empezamos esta banda cuando éramos muy pequeñas- apenas unas niñas. Tuvimos ese salto a la fama juntas por un breve periodo con el cover “Enter the sandman” hace 7 años en 2014. Siendo tan jóvenes experimentamos algo que muchos niños no vivían en promedio, lo que nos hizo sentir distintos, pero es algo que siento que muchos artistas a través de su carrera. Teniendo a mi familia a mi lado y viviendo todo con ellos hizo que nuestra conexión se fortaleciera más y más. Escribir música, ir de tour y tocar es más sencillo y fácil porque nos conocemos mejor que nadie y nuestra relación es muy buena
SIGT: ¿Hay algún mensaje que puedas darles a las niñas pequeñas que sueñan con entrar en mundo de la música?
TW: Por encima de todo, no se rindan.
Muchas veces estamos tentados a darnos por vencidos cuando algo no sale como esperamos o se necesita de mucho trabajo duro y constante además de mucha práctica. Tienen que ser disciplinadas para poder avanzar por este camino, pero siempre que tengan una meta a la que llegar—nunca pierdan esa meta—y trabajen duro es alcanzable. Rodéese de personas con las que les importe lo mismo que a ustedes y con las que sean capaces de trabajar y comunicarse positivamente, siento que eso es lo que causa mayor diferencia al trabajar con música en general. Pero lo más importante, sobre todo, es no rendirse. Puede ser difícil, pero el que persevera, alcanza.
SIGT: Felicitaciones por ser parte de The Metallica Blacklist álbum. Es asombroso verlas iniciar su banda con el cover de Metallica “Enter Sandman” y ahora estar en un lanzamiento oficial de la banda
TW: ¡Muchas gracias! Esto cierra una etapa que inició hace mucho tiempo y que se convirtió en una experiencia loquísima. No solo como The Warning pero de la mano con Alessia Cara fue asombroso. Poder estar en el mismo festival que ellos, tocando el mismo día es una locura. Además, este será nuestro primer show desde que todo volvió a abrir. Con el gig en The Blacklist álbum (habiendo participado en este) esperamos poder conocerlos, o por lo menos decir hola por un segundo. Dato curioso: ¡nunca los hemos visto tocar en vivo!
SIGT: ¿Hay algunos otros artistas que están emocionados por ver en vivo en Rockville?
TW: Grandson. Soy una fan, estoy emocionada por verlo ahí
SIGT: Un mensaje para los fans de Rockville
TW: Primero que nada, ¡gracias por venir! Es una emoción tan grande saber que los shows regresan y que todavía hay fans del rock, especialmente en vivo. Me da fuerza y aliento saber que lo que hago aún emociona a personas y llega a un público. Así que a todos ustedes muchas gracias y espero que les guste nuestra banda y que nos sigan escuchando
