Oh, my heart hurts so good i love you babe-so bad, so bad…”
If you haven’t heard these stunningly simple and striking words then maybe you’ve never opened Spotify, given the fact that the song from LA synth trio, LANY is the most streamed track on the Discover Weekly playlist; 15 million streams to date. Behind the incredible numbers are members Paul Jason Klein, Leslie Priest, and Jake Goss who came together as old school friends and got right down to work. They grew from the foundation of work Klein had already written down. “ILYSB” garnered an immediate response from the outside world and had new fans reeling for more.
LANY’s dreamy 80’s-esque pop invites you inside a generation whose obsession with filters and Nikes gets stripped down to the bare essential feelings we all harbor beyond shoes and twitter rants; insecurity, heartbreak, new love, and the uncertainty of a future planet’s problems handed down to us. Their sound borders on bedroom pop, a bedroom I imagine which is retro-mod, a bed made up with a crisp white duvet, old records in wooden crates, Norah Jones spinning on vinyl, and Polaroids hung by clothespins on cream colored twine. They will have you laid up all day with new album KINDA becoming your latest schoolgirl crush. The track, “WHERE THE HELL ARE MY FRIENDS” came with artwork in the form of a staunch cranberry colored background with a small red wine emoji; actual size. The song itself is uptempo and has the guys questioning the sometimes shallow lifestyle they endure in California, (Think “No More Parties In LA” with a lighthearted vibe).
The band is coming off of quite a couple of big festivals including Bonnaroo, Firefly, Outside Lands, Hangout Fest, and Life is Beautiful. It’s no easy feat to capture a crowd of upward toward 80,000 of “generation Y-ers” as they sweat out more than electrolytes in the middle of a field in peak heat; LANY make it look easy.
LANY’s ability to turn a texting phrase into a ballad and flit between global yet cozy outlines them in a Sofia Coppola-hued aura which draws you ever closer to their euphoric ear candy.
Catch them crooning in a city near you and at our very own Backbooth! This show is going to be special, get ready. <3
