LIVE REVIEW: Red Hot Chili Peppers w/ Ice Cube
Reviewed By: Richie Williams
This past Sunday, the Red Hot Chili Peppers continued their Unlimited Love tour with the third of three Florida dates at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood. The tour previously stopped at the iTHINK Financial Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach on Tuesday followed by the MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre in Tampa on Friday. This was only my second time at the Hollywood Hard Rock (the first was back in February for Tool) which is an amazing auditorium which with a capacity of only 7,000 which is at the low end of venue sizes they typically perform at, offering a somewhat intimate experience.
The opening act on this tour is Ice Cube and he definitely delivered by warming up the crowd with N.W.A. hits as well as his subsequent solo career. Accomanying him on stage was WC from Westside Connection. Cube, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (with N.W.A.), wasted no time getting things started beginning the show with “Natural Born Killaz” which was the first release with Cube and Dr. Dre after splitting with N.W.A. The giant LED screen at the back of the stage flashed clips from his music videos and past movies as the show continued with the movie sake tract “Friday” and the prominent 1993 No. 1 hit “Check Yo’ Self.” The rest of the set included some of my favorite bangers such as “Wicked” which I became familiar with back in the Korn Follow the Leader days, as well as the classic “Straight Outta Compton,” the booty shakin’ “You Can Do It” and the legendary “Today Was A Good Day.”
After a brief intermission, it was time for the Chili Peppers. The fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famers made their way on stage, except for singer Anthony Kiedis who was waiting in the wings off to the side while bassist Flea, drummer Chad Smith and guitarist John Frusciante got themselves aquatinted with each other for the night with an instrumental jam intro which peaked as Kiedis came on stage, and the popular set opener “Can’t Stop” from 2003’s By The Way erupted the room into what would be an incredible 18-song set. Immediately following were two big hits with “Scar Tissue” and “Around the World” from 1999’s Californication. The large LED screen in the background perpetually showed psychedelic graphics that swirled and blended with occasional video of the band on stage. One of my favorite moments was Kiedis saying to Flea “I dedicate this next one to you,” right before playing “Me & My Friends.” Another favorite moment was the “Right on Time” intro with Eazy-E’s “Boyz-n-the-Hood” intro. The set included some newer tracks such as “Tippa My Tounge” and “Black Summer” and had a nice balance of upbeat and mellow tracks. Notable hits played from their 35-year history for me included “Soul to Squeeze” (shout out to the movie Coneheads) and “Suck My Kiss,” as well as “By the Way” which ended the set. The encore featured Kiedis wearing a cowboy hat as they played two more tracks from 1991’s Blood Sugar Sex Magik, firstly being “I Could Have Lied” and then the inevitable “Give It Away.”
