POST MALONE LIVE REVIEW

Review by Spencer Storch

In a world of musical fusion, only one man dares to seamlessly blend R&B, trap, hip-hop and pop. That man is Post Malone and tonight he heats up the Mid-Florida Credit Union Amphitheatre in Tampa. The chart-topping artist is ready to deliver a night of pure magic. Eager to showcase his latest masterpiece, the brand new album AUSTIN, Post Malone leaves no stone unturned on his “If Y’all Weren’t Here, I’d Be Crying” Tour. As the crowd buzzes with anticipation, the stage is set for an unforgettable evening of music. Join with me as we transcend genres to live in the reverb that is, Post Malone.

The night opens with indie rockers, Beach Fossils, who have been gently rocking the nation since their inception in 2009. Hailing from New York, this lofi duo set the stage for an unforgettable night. A short break later, the main event begins.

A dark stage gives way to a spotlight on a four pack of stringed instruments to begin the show. This beautiful preamble allows for the rest of the large live band to get into place while the man of the hour finds his way out into the throng of rabid fans.

Post casually strolls on stage and the crowd goes wild. I mean deafeningly loud. He smiles as he walks across the front of the stage, raising his signature solo cup. He is of course wearing his trademark cut off jorts (jean shorts) and his die hard fans are ready, matching him with their own versions of his casual attire. He only has a moment to thank the crowd before fireworks and hella deep bass blast from the stage to begin “Better Now.” It’s here that the roof comes off the Mid-Florida Credit Union Amphitheater. The crowd is almost louder than the music! Phones and hands up! Posty owns the stage as he uses all of his dorky dance moves. I’ll be honest, I’m here for it. He loves his music and is living it now in front of us. I would rather see his dorky dance moves to his own music than see a choreographed show. His down to earth stage presence makes him so relatable.

They flow into “Wow.” and the crowd shouts “G-Wagon” as loud as they can. This is when they deploy their arsenal of lights and pyrotechnics. This stage is decked out in the latest and greatest of concert stimulation. A curved screen sits behind the band with fireworks blasting from every corner. Above them are three curtains of lights that lower and raise during the music as well as shooting flames at the crowd. The multimedia package for this show is original and pretty damn cool. After the song, Malone announces that this is his first ever tour with a full band, and his first time playing electric guitar on a tour. From here, he lets out his emo side with “Goodbyes” and the following cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams.” He’s altered the lyrics a bit, but still sings the chorus.

Next is “I Like You (A Happier Song)” which gives way to his new song with Ozzy Osbourne, “Take What You Want.” Flames now lick up the sides of the stage as he performs his hot hits. The fire theme continues as they try to burn the place down with “Rockstar.” Flamethrowers, sparklers, bursts of fire heat up this combustible crowd in Tampa.

Post Malone then switches gears and brings out a fan named Blake to perform “All That You Know” and “Stay” together. The audience shows their appreciation with an ocean of cell phone lights illuminating the venue. Blake gets about 10 hugs and a selfie with Post before they move on to his new song “Overdrive.” He blows a kiss to the crowd during “Wrapped Around Your Finger.” And, I know It’s our first night together and I think I might be falling for him. Following the love song he pauses to give us a few words of encouragement: “Keep f*cking being you. Be creative, be f*cking you! Don’t let anyone stop you because you’re the best!” The crowd loves the positive vibes and raises their energy even more. We dive into “Congratulations” for the last song of the set.

The “Posty” chant begins right away as the packed house in Tampa yearns for more. The band of course obliges and returns to the stage to perform “Sunflower,” a track from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. “Chemical” is chosen for the grand finale and Posty dances with high-knees and tip-toes while riding the vibes provided by this awesome crowd. What a show!
