Jane’s Addiction w/ Love and Rockets, and Crawlers | MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre, Tampa FL | August 29, 2024

The co-headlining North American tour featuring Jane’s Addiction with special guests Love and Rockets, and Crawlers, rolled through Florida and included a Thursday night stop at the MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre in Tampa on August 29th.  The tour also stopped at Daily’s Place in Jacksonville on Tuesday, August 27th and in Hollywood at Hard Rock Live on Saturday, August 31st.  This tour celebrates the reuniting of Jane’s Addiction classic lineup.  Jane’s Addiction have toured regularly over the past decade, but in 2022 the group reunited with founding bassist Eric Avery who left the band in 2010.  Along with Singer Perry Farrel, guitarist Dave Navarro, and drummer Stephen Perkins, this is their first time playing together in 14 years.

English rockers Crawlers opened up the show with a 30-minute set that unfortunately I missed, although what I could faintly hear from the parking lot as I arrived sounded good.

I was unfamiliar with the British alternative rockers Love and Rockets before the show.  I know I had heard their big hit “So Alive” at some point in my childhood but never thought of it since.  It was awesome seeing this band I was unfamiliar with.  The first 40 minutes of the set was a dark, moody 80s vibe, complemented by the black and white video of the band on the venue screens.  However, after “So Alive” was played, the last 40 minutes felt like a completely different band with faster, more intense songs including “Ball of Confusion” (The Temptations cover), “Mirror People” and “Yin and yang (The Flowerpot Man).

This would only be my second time seeing Jane’s Addiction, the first being in 2009 on the NINJA Tour with Nine Inch Nails.  Jane’s Addiction wasted no time getting things started tonight.  Starting with “Kettle Whistle,” the first song and title track from the 1997 album, the slow song intro provides the perfect show opener that has an explosive ending.  Throughout the show, the crowd was taken in and out of a mesmerizing trance induced by Farrels’ atmospheric vocals and Navarro’s sick riffs.  Fans were graced with a new song, “Imminent Redemption” which begins with a dirty Avery bass line and set the tone for this chapter of the band.  Notable favorites for me were “Whore’s”, “Ted, Just Admit It…” (my number one favorite), “Jane Says,” “Mountain Song,” and the set closer “Ocean Size.”  The one-two combo punch encore of “Stop!” and “Been Caught Stealing” was a knockout move capping off an amazing show.
