If I had to name my favorite punk band, no other band comes to mind more than a politically minded group with hardcore melodies that was formed 28 years ago in Hermosa Beach, California. From playing backyard parties just for fun until the cops showed up, to being one of the most successful independent acts ever, Pennywise has continuously made a name for themselves and are among the ranks with several other SoCal area artists like Black Flag, The Circle Jerks and Descendents. I think the reason Pennywise appealed to me so much as a kid was because I started listening to them when I started to wake up from the music matrix and began breaking away from the mainstream music that I was unaware I was tolerating. It was fast and rebellious, and it fit perfectly with the aggressive skating and Cocoa Beach surfing I was obsessed with. Pennywise has helped lead a new worldwide movement in American punk rock that has expanded curious minds and inspired thoughtful discussions from a small tight-knit subculture to every corner of the globe.

For their “U.S. Fall Tour 2016” Pennywise is celebrating by performing their 1995 classic album About Time in it’s entirety. The album brought them a lot of new fans and popularity with tracks “Same Old Story,” “Perfect People,” and “Every Single Day” hitting international airwaves. The first time I saw Pennywise was at Club Firestone in Orlando in the late 90’s. It was the night before Warped Tour in Orlando, which they also played, so I saw them twice within 24 hours. I even got up on stage at the end of the Club Firestone show during “Bro Hymn” along with dozens of other fans who were hopping up on stage and then launching out into the crowd, as usual. It was absolutely nuts and my first time experiencing a concert that rowdy. Nowadays at a Pennywise show, I just run in circles around my fiancé while yelling the lyrics and fist pumping, trying so very hard to embarrass her, which I’m pretty sure I succeed at. Here’s a quick video clip of “Same Old Story” and “Society” from my last Pennywise show which was in Cape Canaveral, Florida during the Summer of 2014 on their tour with The Offspring and Bad Religion.

Pennywise will also play many other hits and fan favorites on this tour, duhhh, and no one is leaving until they properly close the show with their heartfelt punk anthem “Bro Hymn.”
