I knew it was my express responsibility to see Minus the Bear when I told a friend I was thinking about it, and his eyes got wide before he very concisely instructed me – “Oh, dude. Go.” Lucky for me, the five-piece is no stranger to Orlando, and they’re bringing their spastic brand of indie-rock to the Social for a very special two-night event this weekend.

Minus the Bear’s decade-and-a-half long catalog is a jewel among indie rock bands that have periodically circled and borrowed from their inimitable style. Arguably the shining achievement of that career is 2005’s Menos El Oso – a sophomore release that is so strikingly warm and intelligent, but hauntingly candid, spasmodic, and driving, that it bridges an unlikely gap between melody and entropy.

Minus the Bear themselves owe as much to Miles Davis as they do Fugazi – frolicking guitar licks are ordered into precision by relentlessly catchy drum beats; vocals are ghostly and frank; and seemingly dissonant layers of sound unify into a harmonious clamor. Often spacy, sometimes twinkling, the quintet wields a healthy dose of dissonance that conjures the beauty of chaos over the perfect shape.

Menos El Oso is the place that Minus the Bear really honed that sound, and transcribed it into eleven tracks of tangible growth. The sound and wit of each progressive song builds on the aura that came before it. Menos El Oso is less a concept album than it is an atmosphere of sound, and an easy touchstone for fans as well as the genre at large.

Ten years, a few remixes, and countless basement radio plays later, Minus the Bear are revisiting Menos El Oso, and belting it out front-to-back at our very own two-night event. The Social hosts both nights, this Friday, November 6, AND Saturday, November 7, so there’s no excuse to miss the party. If their reputation is any bearing, I won’t be the only wide-eyed fan dancing, singing, and taking in the beautiful chaos.
