If you’re already planning on paying The Social a visit this Friday to see David Bazan do his satisfying singer-songwriter thing, here’s a suggestion we’d like to lob at you: show up on time. Get there damn early even. Claim your spot of floor and catch the entirety of Michael Nau’s opening set. If you’re unfamiliar, just know his 2016 album Mowing is one we could loop forever in the background without being real mad about it. Start to finish, it’s a cozy, quiet, nuanced little affair and we’d like it to be longer. Each song is sweet candy for the eardrums.

Michael usually goes under other monikers than the one he was born with and has done so for most of his career (Cotton Jones or Page France, anyone?) so this is kind of a new direction for him. That said, he sounds relatively the same. His music is as comfortable as it ever was. Listening to this effort can’t help but remind you of Fruit Bats, Little Joy and perhaps Little Wings. It’s unrushed and fantastic. Chances are seeing these played live will allow you to unwind in ways you’d not thought you could otherwise. You’ll breathe easier, relax longer.

Mowing began as an album of odds and ends that Michael would record between projects. It got to the point that he had enough good stuff to want to release it to the world. Thank goodness he did. It’s nearing the end of the summer (so they say), but this stuff could soundtrack the remainder of the season’s gauzy hot days. Turn your rotary fans on high, stretch out with one of those umbrella drinks and press play. Again and again and again.
