What happens when you put, say, Lorde, Lana Del Rey, and maybe a little Patsy Cline into a blender? You get Melanie Martinez, one of the newer fresher faces in pop music. Coming off the release of her album Cry Baby last year, the album is charting on Billboard charts and she is selling out pretty much every date of her “Cry Baby” tour. You could say that Ms. Martinez has had a pretty good year. I can say I had the opportunity to catch her show back in August and it’s held on as one of my Top 5 shows of the year. At this point, she was still semi-unknown and was playing at The Social, a packed Social nonetheless, with basically only standing room, filled from wall to wall. Everybody wanted to catch a glimpse of Martinez, also known as “crybaby.”
The dark lyrics blended together with nursery rhyme pop music, you could say Martinez isn’t your everyday pop star. She is covered in tattoos; she has multicolored hair; she is always dressed up in some outrageous outfit. But for me, as a fan, I love every little bit of it! It’s unique. It’s different. It’s what we need in the music scene, a girl who doesn’t give a shit about anything but her fans and the music she writes.
Her latest self-produced, double-feature video for the song “Soap/Training Wheels” basically explains it: she will do what she wants with her videos/music/image, and nobody is going to stop her.
I highly recommend picking Cry Baby and hell, even give her first Dollhouse EP a listen as well. You can buy those here. The former really holds up as an album and just doesn’t have the usual one or two heaving hitting singles on it.
