Kongos Live Review & Concert Photos w/ Sir Sly & Colony House | The Beacham Orlando | February 3, 2015

by • March 22, 2015

No matter how little you believe you dance, you can’t help but rock your head to Kongos. Kongos caught a rather large crowd with their unique beats and wide selection of rarely seen used on-stage instruments.

Colony House opened the night, a small band out of Franklin, Tennessee. This three piece set features Caleb Chapman on vocals, Will Chapman (Brother) on drums, and Scott Mills, a friend of the brothers, on guitar. The Chapman brothers are the son’s of famed Contemporary Christian music artist, Steven Curtis Chapman. They currently have 3 EP’s and a full-length album (When I was Younger, released July 22, 2014), which were all self-released without the backing of a record label. This band took the stage reminding me of old Relient K, taking an inspiration between a cross between rock and pop in a upbeat way. It was a good surprise that set the mood to lean more to the rock side, easing you into what was to come.

With a crazy haircut, and control over the stage Landon Jacobs makes his presence known as the lead singer of Sir Sly. Sir Sly was a group I was extremely excited for. I was looking forward to seeing this LA-based band’s pop-mix, good drum hits backing a nice, strong tone.

You Haunt Me, their debut album, features the hit song “Gold,” but the real star of that album is their first song released, “Ghost,” on March 14, 2013. There’s a line that comes in with the opener and the closer of their song “Inferno” that flows so smooth off the tongue, “I think you clipped my wings to save me from the sun, forgot my hands and knees i had to learn a lesson.”

Sir Sly was an interesting band for me to catch because and I was completely caught off guard by the onstage performance. I was not ready for how much rock there was in this performance. I was also not prepared for the amount of live instruments as opposed to computer generated songs, something I have come to expect from a lot of artists in this day and age. There was a little here and there, but for the most part it was all done live. This was a pleasure to watch, and an exciting show as a photographer to capture.

Kongos are this insanely talented set of four brothers from South Africa. Daniel (guitar and vocals), Jesse (drums, percussion and vocals), Johnny (keyboard, accordion, and vocals), and Dylan (bass guitar, steel guitar, and vocals), grew up in London and in various parts of South Africa. I first caught them in 2014 opening up for Kings Of Leon on the “Mechanical Bull Tour.” Kongos fit in perfectly on that “Mechanical Bull Tour,” but nobody in the crowd knew whom they were until they played “I’m Only Joking” at which point you saw the crowd kind of go “oooh….”

That was not the case at this show. It was very obvious that this crowd, in the smaller venue of The Beacham with a club atmosphere, this band was the anticipated act. They came out to a loud applause and delivered an amazing show. Kongos opened with “Hey I Don’t Know” which eventually rolled into the popular “Come With Me Now,” before a Beatles cover, “Eleanor Rigby,” made an appearance. Eventually “I Want To Know” was followed by an amazing performance of “I’m Only Joking” which featured the most incredible set of smoke rings I have ever seen in my life that matched to the drum kick.

The crowd sang along the whole time, hands in the air, chanting along. I can’t help but want more. They played an encore of covers, “Tokoloshe Man” by John Kongos, and a cover of “Blue Mondays” by New Order. Hopefully I manage to catch them again on my travels.
