Keegan Matthews (of Leisure Chief) is an Orlando, FL native who is heavily influenced by John Coltrane’s approach to modal harmony, Weather Report’s spontaneous attitude, and Macintosh Plus’ vaporwave textures. His extended and exploratory solos stimulate the imagination and will broaden your horizons. His music is a full-on experience, bringing jazz to the people in a way they can really shake their tail feathers.
The Keegan Matthews Trio features keyboardist and composer Keegan Matthews, Youtube sensation Juna Serita – a virtuosic electric bassist from Tokyo, Japan. She’s no joke: she put my jaw on the floor several times over the course of the evening. And on drums, Rion “Machine Gun” Smith, from the band(s) Sam Rivers and the Rivbea Orchestra, Shak Nasti, and The Blue Man Group. Arguably the best drummer residing in Central Florida with the ammunition to play a wide spectrum of styles.
Tonight they dazzle an enthusiastic group of fans at Will’s Pub. My favorite song of the night is the opener, a Herbie Hancock inspired tune, called “It’s a Vibe.” Next they add Syoma on guitar for the groovy “Supernova Cosmic Killer.” They crush a cover of Weather Report’s “Black Market” before playing a pair of Juna’s tunes, “No One” and “Hunter.” She leads the band with tantalizing solos in a style of music I didn’t know I needed. This trio is stellar to say the least! What a show!
