Timeless seems trite. What other word is there to describe such a classic musical sound, though? What other word can gap together the generations this music has touched?
KANSAS is the soundtrack to many Saturday mornings with my Dad. We traipsed across the Susquehanna River to soccer tournaments with sleep still in our eyes and this music was our caffeine. Chocolate drizzled donut crumbs adorned the corners of my lips as I wailed out “Carry On My Wayward Son.” This music holds the sound of my most prized memories. I can hardly claim them as my own, however, as previously mentioned, KANSAS belongs to so many old and young alike.
Thus is the beauty of KANSAS. Fourteen studio albums later and they are still going strong. The lineup has changed quite a bit but original drummer, Phil Ehart and original guitarist Richard Williams will be in tow this Saturday, December 5th at the Plaza LIVE in Orlando. “Dust in the Wind” spent more than 200 weeks on the top charts throughout two decades and is sure to be echoed throughout the theatre that evening. Many cheers, partner twirls, and closed-eyed belts will paint the mural of their sound as each patron enjoys their own time machine of memories linked to each note. Music is for those who love in the dark; who do not need to see in order to believe but only need open themselves to the sound of their own soul.
Saturday evening I will not be in Orlando but instead, I will be shotgun in my Dad’s ‘01 Volvo, driving up interstate 81, the both of us singing to our heart’s content and lung’s discomfort the songs that spanned decades and shaped my childhood.
